I am an avid cyclist and ride my bike everywhere. This weekend I decided to stop by Southland Hardware on Westheimer to pickup some stuff for a project on my way home from work. Upon entering the store one of the clerks confronted me because I was carrying a backpack. Female customer were entering the store with purses. But the clerk and then a manager would not allow me to enter with my backpack saying it was against store policy. They wanted me to leave it behind the desk with the clerk. That was something I could not do since I carry my phone, wallet and my blood pressure medicine in my backpack. They would not provide any reasonable alternative such as having an employee accompany me or a secure place to lock up my bag…
This is blatant gender discrimination.
I have frequented this store for the past 15 years and regularly spend my hard earned money there, usually more then I should. On occasion I've run into this issue at other stores, but usually managers take one look at me and tell me to come on in and shop.
I can not believe store owners are allowed to set up arbitrary rules like this with one rule for women and one for men. Its unequal treatment.
