Could be better

To be honest, there is no such thing as a perfect church. There are many things that are great about South Main. I like the beautiful stain glass church and the awesome pipe organ and choir. The thoughtful sermons and bible study. There are so many programs that they are hard to count.

But what about the people in the church? I have known quite a few people who have been frustrated with the lack of connection between the members. Seems like we're always ""too busy"" to spend time to get to know others and to get involved personally.

Also, this church has a lot of very wealthy people. It's a challenge to fit in socially. I've known a few people who have left the church because of this.

This church has great potential. More honest feedback (necessarily it should be anonymous) would be helpful I think.

A great place to be.

I love this church because of it's thought provoking worship and bible study, the best friends, the fun things we do together, and the incredible campus. But what means the most to me is how the people of South Main Baptist Church continually seek to find ways to live the way Jesus taught us, loving our neighbor as ourselves (feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the unclothed, visiting the prisoners, etc.).
I encourage you to try it - you will find comfort and peace.

A Really Great Church

I really like South Main Baptist Church. It's centrally located in mid-town Houston and even though I live in South-East Houston, I drive 25 minutes to get there every week (of course, in Houston, EVERYTHING is at least 20 minutes away).

I would classify it as progressive Baptist, but it is a pretty diverse crowd. The services are traditional with 2 services Sunday morning with a bible study (Sunday School) in between. The sanctuary is amazing. The high ornate ceilings, the stained glass (which incidentally tell the story of the entire Bible on them), pipe organ, and the rose window make for an incredible worship experience. This is enhanced by a really good music program. The preaching is excellent with Steve Wells as the pastor. The church community is quite diverse (racially, economically, and age) and yet very much has a family feel to it. The church has English, Hispanic, and Cambodian services. Additionally, the church is involved in numerous service and outreach activities such as SEARCH, Emergency Aid Coalition, Buckner after school and orphan support programs, missions to Mexico, Peru, and Guatemala, and many others. One of the things that impresses me most is the pledge that the entire congregation says together (by memory) whenever a someone new joins: ""We pledge ourselves to be the family of God for you in this place. We offer you our love, our joy, our kinship and our hopes. We hope to learn from you, give to you and receive from you by God's grace.""

I have been to many, many churches in my life and I South Main stands out as both unique and exceptional.
