Overall

I was in search for the best dog for our family and for our Golden doodle puppy for months. I visited the Open Door Animal Sanctuary many times during my search. I was able to go back to where they kept the dogs and I was so impressed with how nice and clean it was and how much freedom was given to the dogs. It touched my heart to see that some of the senior dogs were not in cages but in a comfortable area with dog beds and they were walking freely. This shelter is truly amazing! There are several large yards with baby pools and tons of toys for the dogs to play with. There is an amazing dream house for cats with every comfort a cat could ever want. The staff was so helpful and allowed me to bring my dog several times to meet a few dogs. They had a trainer introduce them in a large yard and gave me lots of info on their interactions. Finally we found our little man and to make sure that it would vwork they allowed me to come several times to visit with him and for him to get to know my dog. They were so accommodating because they really love these animals and wnant them to have the best home. I now have my newcvdog and he is amazing! Him and my other dog have become best friends and we are all so happy. I cannot say enough good about this shelter! I know they have strict rules but it is clear that their main concern is giving these animals the best home.

I went to ODAS looking for a dog and had 3 that I wanted to look at but the young Lady behind the counter (Emily) must of had me pegged because she wanted me to look at pictures of other dogs , so I did kinda halfheartedly until she reached down and went to one pg in particular and there was this picture of a mixed Bull/Boxer and she said This is the dog for you after a few minutes I agreed to see him,I also asked if he got along with cat's and she said we will find out. So they brought the dog right on in , well he just walked up sniffed 1 cat and went on about his sniffing around and didn't give the cat a second thought ,we then took him outside to visit for a little bit. After a short time I decided I would take him,she took me back in I filled out directions to my place and they told me alittle more about him ,Like how stubborn he was ,I told her that the dog just met his match .. well they came and approved me on sat 2 wks ago and they were right HE IS STUBBORN, SO AM I, we have been playing each other ,The end result is I had to learn him and he had to learn me and now it's starting to work slowly but it will get better . As far as their surprise Rules they have them for a reason and if you can't live with them Oh Well .......... I'm happy !!!!

Editorial review from Citysearch

Just got home from Open Door Animal Sanctuary, we were looking to adopt a kitten for the family, my daughter mostly, and when we got there; there were many cats and cute kittens roaming free in the office, we were asked if we needed help and i said yes, we are thinking of adopting a kitten and the girl gave me paperwork that she said needed to be filled out before we could even look at the kittens/cats.... so i spent ten to fifteen mins filling out the necessary paperwork while my 10 yr old daughter was already getting attached to several of the cute kittens roaming the office. When i finished and turned in the paperwork the lady read it and said that we could not adopt from them until we had our DOG spayed....we were trying to adopt a CAT ...how would that matter?? they cannot breed and we did not get the dog from them....my daughter was crying and crushed and i was furious. I looked on their website and nowhere on it does it say that your pets you already own at home need to be fixed before they will allow you to adopt. Not to mention that we drove a half hour to get there and wouldn't have bothered had we known all this. It is not a wonder why they have over 300 cats there, for one their prices are high and two they don't let you adopt any thing. THIS IS WHAT THEY HAVE ON THEIR SITE.... ""Open Door Animal Sanctuary requires that all adopted animals be spayed or neutered, so all animals (puppies and kittens included) adopted from ODAS will be spayed or neutered before leaving our facility"" NOT A SINGLE WORD about the pets you already own being spayed or neutered...Very unhappy experience and we left very angry and with our daughter crying....never going there again. AND I SUGGEST THEY POST THESE IDIOTIC RULES ON THEIR SITE AND SAVE EVERYONE A LOT OF GRIEF.

Fantastic Organization

I was so impressed with the staff and volunteers - how they care for each animal. I also was impressed with their clean facilities. I have read a few reviews where people say they didn't want to take their animals. They are run on donation, they are no kill. They only have so much room. I'm amazed people can't realize they can't just blink their eyes and make more room appear. This is a great organization and were very good to us.

Great!

This was my first time adopting a pet and I love my little kitty. I choose them because they are a no-kill shelter. Everyone there is so nice and helpful. They even gave me some free medication and didn't charge me for a vet visit shortly after I got him. I'm hoping to get my next cat from there soon!

Wonderful Shelter with Wonderful Animals

I adopted a cat from a shelter that is at one of the local pet stores on the weekends. The cat I adopted was a stray and never really settled in to living in a house with a family. Because I take pet ownership seriously and wanted a cat that would be a part of my family for 16+ years I returned the cat and began looking elsewhere. Open Door is a WONDERFUL animal shelter that houses wonderful pets. When I arrived at Open Door I was astonished by the casual approach to the cat area and what that atmosphere did for the cats living there. It is almost like you get to see what the cat is really like because it is not confined to a cage all day. You can see how they intereact with other cats, and with people and the employees, this is very helpful in selecting the right cat. Even better, with all the cats they have, the ladies working there knew so much about each cat. When I told them what I was looking for, how old my kids were, etc. they knew which cats to introduce me to and which not to. So much so when I saw a cat I liked they told me flat out that while the cat might be nice now she did not do well with little kids and therefore she wasn't an option. While I could have been annoyed that they were making that decision for me, I appreciate that they want the animals adopted to compatable homes. Looking back, I wish the other shelter had done that. Open Door also does home visits prior to all adoptions. While that may seem a bit much, it is a great idea since so may people tend to get a pet on the spur of the moment, the home visit prevents that. The Open Door person who came to my home wanted to see my other cat, wanted to see where the cat's food is kept, where the liter boxes were. Again while I don't like having to prove myself as a good pet owner it really was nice to see that Open Door cares so much about the long-term care of the animals they adopt. I ended up adopting an adult female cat, she is a wonderful cat, she is everything they told me she would be. Open Door is a wonderful place. Take the time, spend the money on the gas and drive the extra distance, it is worth it!
