Root Canal Treatment
If you've had a root canal performed in the past, you likely assumed it would be a one-time procedure. However, that isn't always the case. While a root canal can last a lifetime, there are occasions where the treated tooth might need additional attention for one reason or another. This is known as endodontic retreatment. There are varying reasons why this might be necessary.
Apicoectomy
There are several types of endodontic surgery. The most common is an apicoectomy, in which an endodontist treats the tooth interior through the root tip. Other forms of surgery include removing a tooth to treat it outside the mouth, dividing a cracked tooth, removing tooth roots, or repairing injured roots. In rare instances, an endodontist may perform surgery for diagnostic purposes. Though with modern imaging techniques such as cone beam CT scans and digital radiography, this reason for surgery is not as common.

When a tooth is cracked, it is susceptible to all kinds of additional damage. The crack may grow deeper and more severe, exposing the inside of the tooth. Even a minor tooth crack needs to be inspected by an endodontist as soon as you discover it. A crack in a tooth, much like one in a windshield, will likely grow and expand over time. It also weakens the structural integrity of the tooth, which can lead to other issues. Should the crack expand below the gum line, it will eventually corrupt the tooth's roots, potentially forcing an eventual tooth extraction.

Teeth Whitening
During the root canal therapy procedure, the nerve endings and other organic material within the tooth (also known as the pulp) are removed. The internal canals of the tooth are then cleaned out, a whitening application is injected (although this is usually only done when the root canal is performed on an externally visible tooth), and then the tooth is filled.
