Dental Examination
Our dental team is dedicated to preventing serious oral health issues before they start. Regular dental exams are a critical piece of preventative dentistry. At every exam, we do a complete check for any signs of emerging problems, including signs of cavities, gum disease, lesions or other issues. If we discover something troubling, we can immediately address it and decide how to proceed.
X-rays
Tooth decay is one of the most common dental problems we see at Porter Dental Health Clinic. But in the past, all our team had to detect tooth decays or caries was the dental explorer, a probe-like instrument, and dental X-rays. The dental hygienist or dentist would use the explorer to probe teeth for the presence of cavities; or, they would take X-rays to detect decay between the teeth. But this process was imperfect and it could not detect “hidden” decay inside the tooth.
Oral Cancer Screening
Therefore, you can understand the importance of undergoing regular oral cancer screenings with Dr. Lance Porter or Dr. Will Warren, who are very knowledgeable about the disease. The objective of an oral cancer screening is to identify signs of cancer early, when it is more easily treatable, or to rule out signs of cancer/precancerous conditions so you do not have to worry.

Teeth Cleaning
Another big part of preventative dentistry is regular dental cleanings. During a professional cleaning, our hygienists use special techniques and instruments to thoroughly clean the teeth and gums. Our hygienists also use cleanings as an opportunity to review at-home oral hygiene practices and advise you on caring for your teeth and avoiding certain foods to keep your mouth healthy.
Fluoride Treatment
Dental Sealants
When it comes to preventing tooth decay and cavities, brushing and flossing your teeth are critically important. Additionally, Porter Dental Health Clinic offers a special dental material called a sealant that provides extra protection against tooth decay.

Fillings
Fillings repair teeth that have developed areas of the decay. The restorations fill the space left over after diseased tooth material has been removed. Metal and amalgam fillings have become outdated and newer, tooth-colored fillings have fallen into favor. Tooth-colored fillings match the surrounding tooth structure so there is no distinguishing between restoration and tooth. The result is a complete, healthy-looking tooth that can chew and bite normally.
Resin Composite
Dental fillings are small dental restorations that repair teeth affected by cavities. They close the holes left by tooth decay, restoring normal appearance, health and function to the teeth. Older fillings were made from metal materials, but nowadays most fillings that Porter Dental Health Clinic uses are crafted from tooth-colored, natural-looking materials like composite resin or porcelain.

Crowns
Inlays and onlays are restorations that repair damaged teeth. They are considered a more conservative approach to full-coverage crowns, which are also used to reconstruct damaged teeth. Unlike crowns, inlays and onlays do not require significantly filing down the tooth structure. Inlays and onlays simply fit into the space left after damaged or diseased tooth structure has been removed. You can think of them as treating only tooth decay as opposed to the entire tooth. Inlays and onlays are created in an outside dental laboratory and are virtually indistinguishable from the rest of the tooth structure.
Bridges
Unless the tooth extracted is a wisdom tooth, Dr. Porter may recommend replacing the tooth with a restoration like a dental bridge, dental implant or partial dentures.

Root Canal Treatment
When the inside of a tooth becomes infected, it can cause significant pain and discomfort. There are two options: extract the tooth (leaving a noticeable gap) or save the tooth with endodontic treatment, otherwise known as a root canal.

Deep Cleaning
Usually the first step of treating early-stage gum disease involves a professional cleaning called scaling and root planing. During the cleaning, the dental team cleans the teeth thoroughly, removing plaque and hardened plaque called tartar. This includes plaque and tartar inside any periodontal pockets. The root surfaces of the teeth are smoothed, which helps the inflamed or infected gum tissue heal and reattach to the tooth roots. Sometimes medication is prescribed in conjunction with a deep cleaning to help the gums heal.

Dentures
Losing your teeth, whether by dental disease or decay, is upsetting. Luckily, Porter Dental Health Clinic offers a complete range of solutions, including prosthetic appliances called dentures. Available in full or partial sets, dentures recreate the look of a complete set of natural teeth. Dentures allow you to eat, speak and smile just like you did before tooth loss.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
The first step of the process is an oral surgery procedure to place the implant post into the jawbone. An opening is created in the jawbone beneath the gap left by the missing tooth, and the post is installed.
Gum Surgery
If scaling and root planing aren’t enough to treat gum disease, or the disease is particularly advanced, laser or traditional gum surgery may be needed. These procedures can help remove plaque and tartar from areas that are difficult to reach with traditional dental instruments; they can also help to shrink deep periodontal pockets.

Tooth extraction is not as scary or painful as you might assume.
