Dental Care

Vaccination
All staff members will continue to wear masks. Clients have the option of wearing a mask or not. We will not ask about vaccination status. If our client is comfortable without a mask that is their choice, we only ask that if you know you are positive or symptomatic for COVID please use a mask. If you would like a mask, please ask at the reception desk.
Behavioral Counseling
The researchers note the behavioral changes observed in this study parallel similar behaviors observed in separation anxiety. The behavior changes tended to resolve at different times, with changes in affection subsiding between two to six months following the death of a household pet, for both dogs and cats and most other behaviors gradually stopping within two months of the loss.
Nutritional Counseling
A standard poodle we have treated had a several-year history of weight loss, intermittent vomiting and diarrhea, and inconsistent appetite. She responded beautifully to a home-cooked diet created on TCVM principles and has thrived for many years.
Comprehensive Examination
Your pet will then be taken into the hospital and have a identification collar placed and placed in a quiet padded cage to wait until the procedure time. When it is time for the procedure we will give your pet a complete physical examination to be sure nothing has changed since the last visit. Your pet will then be given a pre-medication, this typically is composed of an opiate and a sedative, these medications “take the edge off” and provide pain control during the dental work. It takes about 15 minutes for this medication to take effect.

We know that pet medications can be very costly, especially for medications that are for chronic diseases such as arthritis, allergies and flea/tick control.
Pain Management
Hopewell Animal Hospital is proud to announce that we have become Certified by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Unlike our human counterparts, veterinary hospitals do not have to be certified. The AAHA certification is extended to about 12% of the the veterinary hospitals nationwide, currently that is only 4000 hospitals. We have been preparing for this evaluation for 1 year. This certification ensures that we have looked at every aspect of our practice from anesthesia and pain management to record keeping and client communication, there are currently 940 standards to which we adhere. A young adult cat being treated for asthma with steroids and bronchodilators, which both have relatively serious side effects, was still having coughing episodes and intermittent difficulty breathing. After three sessions of acupuncture and the addition of an herbal combination, his cough was gone. His occasional asthma attacks responded well to individual acupuncture treatments.

Dr. Laura Leigh Frazier grew up in Old Lyme, Connecticut and received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Connecticut in 1985. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University in 1989, and has been working in general and emergency care in New York and Connecticut since graduation. She enjoys internal medicine, soft tissue surgery and especially dentistry. She likes gardening, kayaking, yoga and spending time with her husband, two sons, their dog, Melo and their cat, Toby.
