Merrill & Associates, Inc began in Austin, Texas in 1977 as "The Houseworks". It was a one woman show, primarily focusing on major home remodels. In 1980, "The Houseworks" came to Hawaii and partnered with Gordon Cochran, AIA. During that phase, their clients included several small restaurants and shops at Ala Moana Center, Honolulu and Grove Farm, Kauai. For many years, "The Houseworks" continued as a small design firm, focusing mainly on residential and small office projects. In the late eighties, model homes became a large part of the business, and a new team was born. "The Houseworks" became Merrill & Associates, Inc, and began a long and close relationship with Philpotts & Associates, Inc Together, the two firms collaborated on a number of major projects over the years. During that time, Kathy Merrill Kelley was lead designer for Sergio's Italian Restaurant in Honolulu and The Outrigger [ now the Marriott ] Waikoloa Beach Resort, including Nalu's Bar & Grill. She designed in tandem with Lowell Tom, a Philpotts & Associates senior designer, The Orchid [ now the Fairmont Orchid ] at Mauna Lani, including The Sunset Terrace, Brown's Beach House, The Grill, The Orchid Court and The Paniolo Lounge & Polo Bar. The Colony Surf [ now W Honolulu - Diamond Head ] was another project in which Kathy Merrill Kelley teamed with Mary Philpotts. For this project, the designers traveled to Indonesia and met with furniture manufacturers who built to their design specifications. After a long and fruitful relationship under one roof, in September 2004, Merrill & Associates, Inc. and Philpotts & Associates, Inc began working independently of each other. Merrill & Associates, Inc is now headquartered in Iwilei, Honolulu, in a wonderfully funky 1300 square foot loft. The design firm consists of two senior designers, two junior designers, and two project managers. Current projects consist primarily of luxury residential projects throughout the world. Our desire is to continue in the realm of residential, hospitality and restaurants.
