Kidney Cancer

Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are becoming more common in children than ever before, in some cases, stones are developing in children as young as five or six years old. Kidney stones form when urine contains too much of certain substances. This substance imbalance can create small crystals that grow and become stones. Nearly 50 percent of all females get a urinary tract infection at some point during their lifetime. This painful infection often occurs when one or more parts of the urinary system (kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra) become infected with a pathogen, most frequently, a bacteria.
Prostate Cancer
Cryoablation is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat prostate cancer without removing the prostate. By using no incisions, we freeze the prostate gland and cancer in order to destroy the cancer cells. During cryoablation, we apply liquid nitrogen or argon gas to the diseased cells. We use image-guidance such as Computer Tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance (MR) to help guide the freezing substances to the prostate.
Lung Cancer
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, and is second only to lung cancer in the number of cancer deaths. Prostate cancer is most commonly found in men over the age of 50, and greater than 65 percent of all cases are diagnosed in men 65 years and older as the incidence of prostate cancer increases with age. The prostate is the walnut-sized organ located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum that produces fluid that makes up a part of semen.

Urge Incontinence – A sudden, intense urge to urinate, followed by an involuntary urine loss. Your bladder muscle contracts, which acts as an alert that may last several seconds to one minute. You may need to urinate often, including throughout the night. MRI – This large machine uses a magnet linked to a computer to create detailed pictures of your urinary tract and lymph nodes. An MRI can show cancer in your kidneys, lymph nodes or other tissues in the abdomen.

CT scan – A series of detailed pictures of your abdomen show your urinary tract and lymph nodes, and may show if cancer is present in your kidneys, lymph nodes, or elsewhere in the abdomen.

Radiation Therapy
Active Surveillance, observation, is used in some cases of low-risk disease, as well as among older patients for whom active treatment with surgery or radiation therapy may not be possible or necessary. Active surveillance is most often used because some prostate cancers may never become life threatening.

Vasectomy
Vasectomy is a surgery that a man may choose if he no longer wants the ability to father children. It’s the safest, most effective, permanent male birth control option. This is considered an effective, permanent birth control method with virtually 100 percent prevention. We perform a vasectomy in our office and the outpatient procedure generally takes about 30 minutes.

Michael Traver, M.D., FACS, is a board certified urologist with Western Michigan Urological Associates. He obtained his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Wake Forest University. In addition, Dr. Traver completed a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle. He is a Holland native and earned his undergraduate degree from Hope College.
Hysterectomy
Vaginal prolapse is a fairly common condition; in fact most women develop some form of vaginal prolapse during their lifetime, most often following menopause, childbirth, or a hysterectomy. The majority of women who develop this condition are over the age of 40. Many women who develop the symptoms of a vaginal prolapse do not seek medical help because of embarrassment, yet others do not seek treatment because they do not experience symptoms.
Laparoscopy
Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy (RALP ) is the most common surgical treatment for prostate cancer. This approach uses laparoscopy as well as small surgical working elements that replicate human hand movement. Generally, RALP means less blood loss, a lower chance of a needed blood transfusion, decreased pain after surgery, and shorter recovery.
Reconstructive Surgery
Rarely, extensive reconstructive surgery such as bladder augmentation (adding a piece of the intestine or stomach to the bladder to increase bladder capacity) may be necessary.

Botox
For patients suffering from Overactive Bladder (OAB) or Incontinence, Botox injections can be used to treat bladder problems such as severe urgency, leakage of urine, and spasms of the urethra. The bladder muscle depends on the nerves to be able to contract or spasm. Botox acts to block the ability of the nerves to send signals to the bladder and urethral muscles causing them to relax.
Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic or “minimally invasive” surgery is a specialized technique for performing surgery. It allows us to perform complex procedures within the abdomen without having to place our hands directly into the body cavity. Laparoscopic surgery is as safe as traditional open surgery.

Physical therapy – This treatment plan may involve manual therapy or massage both externally and internally to stabilize your pelvis before using other treatment options. Manual therapy takes time and patience, and may require one to three sessions per week. Many patients see improvement after six to eight weeks. Your therapist may also incorporate therapies like Biofeedback to help you relax or strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor.
