I love Mexican food a lot. My parents took me to a lot of South MS tex-mex places in Hattiesburg when I was little. By high school, I hated mexican rice and beans. No matter where I went, it was always served luke-warm and hard or scalding and blanched. Until I went to Mama Alma's. It is pricey but I will gladly pay extra for a local family-run restaurant than save $10 by going to a chain joint. The salsa always tastes fresh and the queso is the best I've had - it actually has a flavor other than melted cheese in a bowl. My tamale wasn't soggy! The quesadillas are huge. The rice and beans I could eat all day long. Ask her for her daily specials - the plantain empanada was a wonderful surprise.
I brought my wife here and my server walked around us 3 times and served people that came after us. The hostess was great, she's the only reason I'm giving 3 stars. service was terrible other than the hostess. I had to go to the bar to get my own drinks so ill never come here again.
This restaurant is very New Orleans like in style. The dishes are creole and Cajun inspired and taste wonderful. I have dined here three times and the meal has been great every time. The atmosphere is good for family or group dinning too. Definitely a good choice for lunch or dinner!
