This is is such a rarity to find anymore, a jewelry store where the repairs are actually done onsite, where they make the jewelry there from scratch, and you can talk to one of the jewelers about your order. I've been a jewelry fiend for years, but never saw anything like the stuff they carry.
Price range: from silver key chains to strands of black Tahitian Pearls with platinum and diamond rondelles.
Their attention to customer service, a biggie with me, is unmatched. They don't have a snooty attitude you sometimes find in jewelry stores, they are laid back and friendly without being pushy. You can breathe in there.
When I went, they were happy to explain the process of making a custom piece. They even said that it was possible to reuse old jewelry, if the metal was right, in making the new piece.
The guy who makes the jewelry carves a wax model and after it's approved, he casts it, and sets the stones. It's surprisingly affordable for what you get, and if you reuse old jewelry (like wedding bands, necklaces, etc), you pay for the artist's work. It's a great way to get something unique you will treasure. He's really good and has national awards.
The jewelry they make is very well made. I did a a side by side comparison with two rings very expensive rings from famous name stores, and Designer Gold's quality was better by a long shot. Much heavier, with thicker shanks, bigger prongs, and sturdier overall construction. It's just amazing that more people don't know about this place. It is on the second floor, so maybe that's why, but it's worth the walk and there's even an elevator.
They have diamonds from Canada, so you don't have to worry that some little girl got her hand chopped off for digging the stone out of the ground in Angola. The other great thing is that they carry really unique and interesting jewelry by other artisans who are not cookie cutter. They have a huge amount of pearls. But they'll make you whatever you want, even if it's something small and silver. If you buy a ring there, they size it for life, for free and have a fabulous return policy.
Check them out, you'll be glad. I was.
