Emergency Care
A component of the WMR Sports Medicine Program is our Athletic Training Outreach. WMR has provided Athletic Trainers to local high schools for more the 20 years. Each school is provided with their own, full-time, Athletic Trainer. Each Athletic Trainer is nationally certified through the National Athletic Trainers Association – Board of Certification (NATA-BOC). In each school the Athletic Trainer works with the athletes in Emergency Care, Rehabilitation of Injuries, Injury Prevention, Communication, and Education. WMR is also able to work in conjunction with the Western Michigan University’s, Graduate Athletic Training Program.

We center our care around the specifics of your needs. A comprehensive evaluation is the first step we take to ensure all appropriate options are considered. Treatments include a variety of therapeutic applications, including: Therapeutic exercise; manual (hands-on) mobilization and manipulation of tissues and structures; traction; electrical stimulation; and therapeutic ultrasound. A home exercise program is also provided, to both supplement treatment, and provide a framework for you to continue once you have met your goals and skilled therapy services are no longer required.

Joint Replacement
For example, with a client suffering a specific injury to the upper extremity (ie. Joint replacement surgery) the occupational therapist will utilize specific manual techniques as well as splinting and an individualized exercise program to increase strength and movement while decreasing pain. Another example may be if a client has suffered a stroke. This stroke has most likely impaired performance and safety with daily tasks in many ways. The occupational therapist will provide information on adaptive strategies and compensatory techniques along with home modification and safety training for the client and caregivers in order to achieve the highest level of independence. In addition, the occupational therapist will focus on the return of movement and strength in the affected upper extremity in order to allow the client to once again participate in functional tasks and daily care. Occupational therapists bring a holistic perspective to the treatment team and evaluate the client’s physical and emotional involvement as well as how the client’s environment affects his/her performance and independence.

Mark is a licensed Physical Therapist in our Wayland Metro Health and our Hamilton locations. Mark is also Co-owner of West Michigan Rehabilitation. He earned his Bachelors of Science as a Physical Therapist in 1980 from Wayne State University. Mark is ASTYM certified and has specialized training in McKenzie Method, Mulligan manual therapy, muscle energy techniques, and industrial rehabilitation training. Outside of work Mark enjoys kayaking, bicycling, hiking and traveling.
