Arthritis is a major cause of joint pain, stiffness, and swelling in the hip. Arthritis can occur for many reasons, including aging, “wear and tear,” injury, disease, and developmental abnormalities of the hip structure. There are over 100 different types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis, Post-Traumatic Arthritis, and Rheumatoid Arthritis are types of arthritis that most frequently develop in the hip.
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is caused by structural problems in the foot, such as flat feet or high arches. Sudden weight gain, obesity, and prolonged standing or walking on hard surfaces contributes to the condition. Heel pain that occurs in the morning upon awakening is a hallmark sign of plantar fasciitis. Fortunately, for the majority of people, symptoms are relieved without surgery.

Laura earned her undergraduate degree in exercise science from Salisbury University and then obtained her PTA degree from Carroll Community College in 2004. Hip fractures are most commonly caused by falls. The risk for hip fractures increases with age. Older adults, especially those over the age of 85, are at the highest risk because of changes in bone structure and overall health. Medical complications from hip fractures can be life threatening. Because of the possible serious consequences, you should see your doctor or go to the emergency department of a hospital immediately if you suspect that you fractured your hip.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is a condition caused by pressure on the ulnar nerve at the elbow. Nerves carry messages between the brain, spinal cord, and body parts. When a nerve is compressed, it cannot function properly. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is the second most common nerve entrapment syndrome, after Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome develops when the tissues and tendons in the Carpal Tunnel swell and make the area within the tunnel smaller. This can happen in association with other medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism and diabetes. The increased pressure within the tunnel causes the Median Nerve to become compressed. The pressure disrupts the way the nerve works and causes the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Usually, the exact cause of carpal tunnel syndrome is unknown.

The goal of physical therapy is to facilitate the healing process for your injury and help you safely return to your sport. Therapeutic exercises including strength training, aerobic exercise, and stretching are an important part of your rehab. They help improve flexibility, strength, endurance, and posture while preventing injury, pain, and deterioration. Sport-specific exercises and modalities such as heat, ice, and ultrasound, may be used together to increase the effectiveness of treatment.

As a large orthopaedic practice with multiple locations and doctors who subspecialize in different body parts and procedures, we can provide an array of services you might not find in smaller orthopaedic offices. Need a sling or crutches? You’ll get what you need before you leave our office. Need X-rays or an MRI? We offer diagnostic imaging in each of our locations.
X-Rays
Computed Tomography
Your doctor may use imaging tests to identify structural factors, such as bone spurs or arthritis, which may contribute to nerve compression. These tests can include X-rays, Computed Tomography (CT scans), or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). An X-ray uses a camera to take a picture of the elbow area to show the bone’s condition. CT scans take pictures in layers, so it produces images in the form of slices that make up the elbow, like the slices that make up a loaf of bread. MRI scans provide a very detailed view of the elbow complex. Like the other imaging tests, the MRI equipment focuses on the area to be examined and takes pictures. All of these imaging tests are painless and require that you remain very still.

Thomas is a Carroll County native and earned his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from Frostburg State University in 2014. During his time at Frostburg, Thomas played varsity lacrosse and participated in fraternal fundraising philanthropy events. Post-graduation, Thomas found himself as a white-water rafting guide before starting at OACM at a technician in 2016. He acquired his PTA degree from Carroll Community College in 2022 with an interest in sports and orthopedics.
Sciatica
Introduction The sciatic nerve is the thickest and longest nerve in your body. The sciatic nerve extends from your lower back down to your feet. If the sciatic nerve is compressed or inflamed, a painful condition called Sciatica can result. Symptoms of Sciatica include shooting pain, tingling, weakness, and numbness that may travel from the lower back, through the back of one leg, and into your foot.

Our orthopaedic surgeons perform arthroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure, to diagnose and repair injuries or conditions in the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle.
Wound Care
The position assists clinicians and medical secretaries in providing direct patient care; including but not limited to phlebotomy, specimen collection, wound care, laser therapy, DME, medication preparation and obtaining patient vital signs. Position also assists in stocking exam room supplies, scheduling patient appointments, and end of day walk-through to ensure all computers are signed off.

If nonsurgical treatments fail, surgery may be necessary to restore normal alignment, pain-free movement, and function. Bunion surgery is used to realign the bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. The toes are placed in their correct positions and the bony bump is removed. Beth graduated with honors from Elizabethtown College with a degree in Occupational Therapy in 1989 and earned her hand therapy certification in 1998. She was also a student of Modern Studies at Loyola University.
Frozen Shoulder
I began therapy on January 22, 2019 with what's commonly referred to as a "frozen shoulder". Kirsten has diligently brought me along to the point where I can now perform all of my professional and recreational activities without pain. Kirsten has that uncommon trait of being both professional and social. She strikes a balance between "pushing" her patients to new limits, and encouraging them to "follow up" with their own home exercises. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend your facility (or Kirsten) to a friend in need.

Aquatic Therapy
Kim graduated in 1992 from an accredited physical therapist assistant program in Baltimore. Over the course of her 25+ year career, she has strengthened her orthopaedic background with additional training in balance and proprioception for the geriatric community. She also spent three years performing aquatic therapy for various patient diagnoses and is able to educate patients in a home aquatic program to enhance their rehab potential.

Morgan earned her manual therapy certification (MTC) in January 2017, and she is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS). In addition, Morgan is trained in the Graston Technique® and she is a RockTape (kinesiology tape) provider.

Our on-site diagnostic imaging services and ambulatory surgical center allow us to promptly evaluate and treat foot and ankle injuries. We provide complete foot care for people with diabetes and participate in the diabetic shoe program.
Bunions Problems
Bunions are a common foot deformity, especially in females. They most frequently result from wearing shoes that are too small, narrow, pointed, or have a high heel. Abnormal pressure from poorly fitting shoes causes the bones in the big toe and foot to move out of position. This results in a large, painful bump on the side of the foot at the big toe. Bunions can also run in families.

People who have diabetes with uncontrolled blood glucose frequently experience foot problems. High levels of blood glucose over long periods of time can lead to nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) and poor blood circulation (peripheral vascular disease). Either of these can cause foot complications such as infections, ulcers or sores, and toe deformities.

Hammertoe is the most common toe deformity. Most often it affects the second toe on the foot, next to the big toe. It causes the middle joint of the toe to bend, leading to curling of the toe resembling a hammer. It is important to diagnose and treat hammertoe early because the condition tends to become worse over time. If left untreated, hammertoe can require surgery. Other toe deformities include claw toe and mallet toe.

Heel spurs are abnormal bony growths that develop at the back of or under the heel. Inflammation around a spur, more so than the spur itself, can cause significant pain.

Plantar Fasciitis
Your heels bear tons of pressure each day when you stand and walk. It’s no wonder that heel pain is a common complaint. Heel pain occurs for various reasons. Common causes of pain beneath the heel include bruising from stepping on something hard, inflamed connective tissue from overuse (plantar fasciitis), and irritated nerves under the heel. Rubbing from poorly fitted shoes, inflamed connective tissue (bursitis), or an inflamed tendon (Achilles tendon) most frequently cause pain behind the heel.

Orthotics are customized shoe inserts that can balance many foot deformities, correct misalignments, reduce foot pain, and make walking more comfortable.
