Preventive Care

Dental Care
Professional cleaning and polishing are needed when plaque and tartar extend below the gums. For thorough dental cleaning, your pet must be anesthetized. This allows for a complete evaluation and treatment of the mouth, including radiographs (x-rays) of all the teeth.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Some of the many diseases transmitted by external parasites (fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes) include Heartworm disease, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Anaplasmosis, and Bartonella (Cat Scratch Fever). Preventive treatments for heartworm, fleas, and ticks are proven safe and effective in reducing the risk of diseases to pets when given monthly all year round.
Pain Management
We are very proactive with pain control. All patients receive preanesthetic pain medications and sedatives, have catheters placed, and receive fluids. Many receive continuous intravenous infusions of opioids and morphine epidurals. All receive a local anesthetic.

Often we see food allergies in cats and dogs. We may recommend allergy testing, medication, or a different type of food for your pet. There are many food options, diets, and meal plans available. Our goal is to keep your pet happy and healthy.

Ear Infection Treatment
This is a surgical procedure used to open the ear canal. It facilitates the removal of some ear tumors. It also allows drainage and healing for severe ear infections.

Knee Problems Treatment
Patellar luxation is most commonly a congenital problem. It is best to repair these luxations before the patient is two years old in order to minimize arthritis in the future.
Heart Disease Treatment
Most patients are incubated and maintained on gas anesthesia. All patients are closely monitored throughout surgical preparation, the surgery itself, and post-op recovery. We monitor pulse, respiration, temperature, EKG, blood pressure, CO2, and O2 levels. In addition, all patients are monitored visually — blink reflex, jaw tone, and strength of the pulse. Following surgery, all patients receive a series of post-operative injections for pain and anxiety and go home from the hospital with oral pain medication.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Because oral health is vital to overall health, your pet’s mouth is evaluated at each annual examination. Periodontal disease is progressive and painful but preventable. Left unchecked, periodontal disease can lead to pain, deep infection, and heart, liver, or kidney failure.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Periodontal disease progresses from a thin film of bacteria called plaque. Initially, plaque is soft and can be removed easily. If not removed, however, the plaque hardens and can lead to inflammation of the gums (gingivitis). Infection is then likely to form around the tooth’s root, endangering the tooth itself and the surrounding tissue.

Margaret Flaherty has been with Riverbend Animal Hospital since its opening in 1999. Her responsibilities cover every hospital area, from providing support to the doctors and veterinary technicians, supervising our laboratory, working with chemotherapy and dental patients, supporting the reception desk, troubleshooting our computer system, and handling all of our ordering needs.

Veterinary Surgery
Located in Hadley, Massachusetts, Riverbend Animal Hospital is an AAHA-accredited general medicine and surgery practice combined with a referral-surgery service for cats and dogs. Our commitment is to provide the highest level of medical and surgical care to our own patients, as well as to the surgical patients referred here from other veterinary hospitals and animal clinics.
Spaying and Neutering
Altering (spaying or neutering) is one way we keep our companion animals happy, healthy members of our community, as it has behavioral, medical and social effects. In males, it is castration, removing the testicles. In females, it is ovariectomy or ovariohysterectomy, removing the ovaries and/or the uterus, also called a spay. Although altering is one of the most common surgeries in our cats and dogs, it is not always simple. We are happy to tackle the more complicated issues such as cryptorchid, intersex, or older or obese spays, as well as straightforward surgeries where the owner would like proactive pain control or closer monitoring.

Laboratory Services
Riverbend Animal Hospital has a full-service in-house laboratory, which enables us to run many of our on-site. As a result, we can have answers back on tests in minutes or hours rather than days. The tests include routine screening tests for Heartworm, Lyme, and other tick-borne diseases, as well as Feline Leukemia and FIV.
X-Ray
Our digital radiography equipment provides high-quality diagnostic x-rays and several types of contrast imaging. We regularly consult with the board-certified radiologists at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals for assistance with more challenging cases. In addition to diagnostic radiography, we perform OFA screening of hips and elbows. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals is an organization that evaluates x-rays for various congenital and developmental orthopedic disorders and is a useful tool for many breeders.
Dental Radiology
At Riverbend, we perform many dental procedures, from routine cleaning and scaling to complicated extractions. We have high-definition digital dental x-ray equipment. We use an ultrasonic tooth cleaner, a polisher, and a high-speed drill. A surgical technician assists the doctor and monitors anesthesia throughout the process. And we employ state-of-the-art pain management protocols, including local nerve blocks, to minimize discomfort.
Microchipping
One out of three pets becomes lost during its lifetime. At Riverbend, we use the HomeAgain® microchip program, the most widely used pet identification program in the country. At our hospital, a chip the size of a grain of rice is inserted under the skin with a needle and can be scanned by a veterinarian, shelter worker, or dog officer when a stray animal is found. Home Again is notified, and the company calls the owner directly.
