- General Info:
Neurosurgery began in Greenville, South Carolina in 1955 when Frank Wrenn MD and Frank Espey MD started a neurosurgical practice at the Greenville General Hospital. Dr. Wrenn was a nationally respected neurosurgeon and was one of the few private practioners who became president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Over the years, other physicians joined the practice and the community to practice neurosurgery in Greenville. Dr. Wrenn’s group became known as Greenville Neurosurgical Group and Dr. Espey founded the Neurosurgical Clinic. Both groups grew and flourished and merged in 1997 to form Southeastern Neurosurgical & Spine Institute which became part Greenville Health System in 2006. In 2009, Upstate Medical Rehabilitation, Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas/University Medical Group Department of Orthopaedics and Proaxis Physical Therapy joined with Southeastern Neurosurgical and Spine Institute to form the first multidisciplinary neurosurgical and spine center in the Upstate of South Carolina. Committed to the total care of patients with disorders of the spine and brain, the center provides an integrated treatment approach that incorporates the expertise of both surgical and non-surgical health care providers. In conjunction with the healthcare network of the Greenville Hospital University Medical Center, Southeastern Neurosurgical and Spine Center continues to provide comprehensive patient care while advancing the understanding of brain and spinal disorders through research and education.

Our highly skilled staff provides comprehensive patient-centered care – from surgery and physical therapy to pain management and counseling – all under one roof. Our practice is part of Greenville Health System, which is among the nation’s respected academic teaching centers. That means patients have access to the latest advances in research, medicine and technology from specialists who deliver compassionate, evidence-based care. Acupuncture This ancient art often has proven to be an effective tool, especially when it comes to chronic pain. Having a professional acupuncturist on site allows us to treat our patients’ pain in non-traditional ways as well. Surgery When surgery is the best approach, our patients are in good hands. Our surgeons are consistently ranked among the best in the region, and our surgical team provides the highest level of expertise in spine and neurological procedures. In fact, Greenville Memorial Hospital has been ranked among the nation’s Top 50 hospitals in both neurology/neurosurgery and orthopaedic surgery by U.S. News& World Report. Pediatrics Our pediatric orthopaedic surgeons are among the few in South Carolina to treat spine-related deformities such as scoliosis, as well as perform brain and spine surgery. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Improving a patient’s quality of life requires a personalized, comprehensive approach to care. Physiatry is the branch of medicine that helps restore and enhance physical function to those affected by brain, muscle and bone disorders. These conditions range from traumatic brain injury to low back pain. Physiatrists use advanced diagnostic tools to identify an injury and have extensive non-surgical resources available to provide optimal care for every patient. Physical Therapy We partner with Proaxis Therapy for access to some of the best therapists and athletic trainers in the country. Their goal is to help each patient reach his or her goals. From the elite athlete to the elderly neighbor, these professionals can create a customized plan for anyone. Procedural Pain Management Acute or chronic pain can undermine the ability to function, and treating it can be complex and multi-faceted. Our specialists diagnose and treat each patient’s pain with a personalized approach, whether that means a long-term pain management program or an acute interventional pain management solution.
