Overall

Im a single woman in my forties very down to earth and spending money on myself is something I very seldom do. I had been a customer of "another" area jewlery store for over 20 years - Due to a terrible chain of events with my ring - I decided to see what Vanhornes could do for me - And BOY OH BOY AM I EVER GLAD I DID !!! Earlier this year I had taken a very sentimental diamond band ring and seperate stone into their establishment to have the stone placed onto/inside the center of the diamond band ring. (both the stone and the ring were extremely sentimental to me and my goal was to keep the ring as it was but yet adding this stone to it) This is when my nightmare started I had been in and out of that store over ten times for numerous issues - each time my ring was getting worse and worse with each attempt to have them "FIX" what they had done the time before. I was sick - the beautiful ring I brought into their store was now a mess - dents, waves, gouges, nicks pits and finally a broken stone - I had sold every peice of jewelry ever owned to originally pay to have this stone placed on this ring and I had nothing more to give - because all of the damage (cover ups) that was done by their jewler I asked if they would take responibilty for this damage and redo my ring - start all over - they said no - that I should of never expected perfection since I had asked to have the ring changed and finally, they would be more then happy to place a new stone in my ring at no charge BUT I would have to buy a stone first - and that would not be cheap - This is when I went into Vanhornes - I was depleated - emotional and angry - I placed my once beautiful ring on the counter - I was first greeted by Bill and I explained my story -he waited patiently as explained what had been done to the ring - I showed pictures of what it once looked like before all of this happened - Bill let me vent and cry as I explained my 8 month ordeal. He called Kevin out to the counter who looked the ring over and together they explained what my options would be and then i asked them about doing what I had never ever imagined I would do - Have them melt my ring down and start all over - customizing a brand new ring / minus a center stone. Bill and Kevin never blinked an eye -they jumped right on the new idea They communicated with me thru phone and email - they bent over backwards throwing themselves into the possibilities of creating a brand new one of a kind ring for me - These two guys worked with me for over an hour we found a style I loved then Bill would take my ideas and create a ring - a few days went by and Bill sent me a computerized image of what he created and my ring was starting to take form - after my approval he went on to create the wax mold (a wax replica of what my ring would like like) which was a fantastic feature to be able to physically try on a mold of the ring BEFORE they actually begin. Then Dec 22 I got the call that my ring was ready !!! Bill and Kevin were both together as they opened up the box to show me my ring - I INSTANTLY CRIED (this time HAPPY TEARS) as I saw what they had done - the ring is BEAUTIFUL and EXACTLY LIKE I WANTED IT - Together these two guys put all they had into creating a ring that I will cherish for the rest of my life - Vanhornes is SIMPLY THE BEST - HANDS DOWN -

I gave Van Horne two opportuni...

I gave Van Horne two opportunities to earn my loyalty. First time I stopped in to get a diamond set into a new setting. This was a very nice approx. 1.75 ct. stone. It was beautiful but the color is a bit lower on the color scale. At first glance, the gentleman looked at the stone and asked me if it was moissanite. Excuse me?!?

How insulting! Because I was dressed very casually, shorts/t-shirt/etc. he assumed my stone couldn't possibly be real. As one of their primary jewelers, he should have recognized a real stone especially considering the lower color range. I haven't seen a moissanite that isn't icy white. For the record, this stone was an authentic, natural GIA graded stone worth approx. $15,000.

Many months later I stopped in as it was convenient and I needed a simple service that would take mere moments. I had purchased a pair of small diamond studs to wear in my second piercings. They were yellow gold and I wanted to have the rhodium dipped in white gold. I have several pieces that are rhodium dipped so I am familiar with the process. The woman who helped me, older woman who wears big/flashy jewelery, seemed to feel put-out to have to deal with such an inexpensive request. She told me "it won't last you know".

Ummmmm, I'm not an expert but based on my own experience it will last quite a while. I just needed the prongs to stay white and they are on my ears so it's not as though they are exposed to significant sweat, soap, etc. Again, I was dressed casually out running errands and I clearly was judged as she looked down her nose at me. As I was under a time-crunch and didn't want to waste time going elsewhere, I had them do the job.

I will not be darkening the door of Van Horne Jewelers again. I do not appreciate the condescending attitude of their employees. I am a college educated professional and certainly do not expect to be treated as though I am an inconvenience.

As the manager and one of the goldsmiths at Van Horne's, I wanted to apologize to you for your experiences and would like to address your concerns. First of all, I would like to assure you that we in no way correlate how customers dress with what they may or may not spend in our store, nor is this an indication of anyone's station in life. I could share countless stories of very wealthy customers coming into our store wearing their pajamas, in various stages of undress, or simply dirty from a hard day at work or the gym. It is our observation that society has become much more casual and this is simply business-as-usual at Van Hornes. In fact, we even have ‘casual Saturdays’ for those of us working that day. I'm sorry that you felt judged, but I really think that there was a misunderstanding. If I am wrong and you really did experience what you thought, then again, I am sorry and can only explain it off to a 'bad day.' This is not an excuse but certainly we’re all human. Regarding the issue with our asking 'if your stone was a Moissanite,' in our experience there is a significant presence of this diamond simulant. The stone is difficult to detect and often has a greenish to yellow tint. It is normal business practice for us to discuss it or otherwise inquire about any potential issue we notice before we leave your presence in order to clean the piece. Conversations regarding worn prongs, chipped or missing stones, or even basic clarification of what is being handed over to us happen every day. We consider this echange a positive thing. I'm sorry that the way we did that somehow insulted you or made you feel awkward, at that was not our intent. Lastly, we are happy to provide rhodium plating services to our customers. In fact, we regularly offer a discounted light polish and rhodium finish while customers wait. Many of our customers have experimented with rhodium plating over yellow gold and we’re happy to oblige them as long as they understand what they’re getting into. It's our desire that customers make long-term decisions that they're happy with and they do this in part, by our sharing the experiences of thousands of satisfied customers regarding the pro's and con's of a particular course of action. Two negatives that come to mind when rhodium plating over yellow gold; 1) the unpredictable nature of how fast it wears away, necessitating the need for frequent treatments and the hassle/costs associated with more thorough applications, and 2) the consequences relating to when/if a customer changes their mind and wishes the piece to be yellow again. In this scenario, the item has to be stripped of all the plating which leads to premature wear that can be costly to restore. So before we fulfill a customers request for this service, it is normal for us to discuss the process and what a customer might expect from that choice. This was no doubt the hesitation you observed by our sales person but I'm sorry that the way in which we did this made you feel embarrassed or incensed. I can assure you that our goal was to help you make the best decision possible. Perhaps we could have been more thorough in our explanations but I know your comments will encourage us to be more careful in how we approach these subjects. Your thoughts are appreciated and I hope that I've addressed them in a way that explains our position Sincerely, Bill Martin, Manager

#1 Jeweler in Michiana!

We shopped all the jewelers in the entire Michiana area. Upon arriving at VH we instantly knew this was the company we wanted to work with. The sales staff was very busy so Dan, a goldsmith, started assisting us. Lori took over and immediately zeroed in our interests. She ordered in diamonds until we found that perfect one. Bill designed our custom engagement ring, offering his great expertise but always listening to what we wanted. We can't wait to have Bill design our custom wedding band in the near future. Professional. Courteous. Knowledgeable. We tell everyone about the best jeweler in Michiana - Van Horne Jewelers!

Overall
Horrible customer service and dated style.

My title pretty much sums it up. I had an awful experience there and did not feel well taken care of. Most of the jewelry is geared towards an older clientele. Personally, I felt swindled. I have shared my experience with friends and have found the same opinion expressed. A good friend had a custom wedding ring designed there and they resold the style, evening advertising it in a brochure. So much for her unique ring. The owner was rude to both me and my husband. We will never shop there again,

Second to None

We cannot say enough great things about Van Horne. Whether we've had a need for new jewelry purchases, general maintenance and upkeep, or repair, Van Horne is THE jeweler choice in Michiana and is certainly second to none.

Researching for an engagement ring for my then girlfriend of 11 years was definitely an exciting and anxious time in my life. Bill understood how much this meant to me, and provided me with the best service and technical advice I could have asked for...even though I was probably not the easiest of customers! After she said Yes, the staff was able to custom design her wedding band for us! When the final product came out, it far exceeded our expectations and complements the engagement ring perfectly. It goes without saying that Van Horne has certainly set the standard in Michiana. We look forward to going in again!

Great jewelry and customer service!

I shopped at virtually every jewelry store in the area searching for an engagement ring for my now fiance. Van Horne was the last of my stops. I was very impressed with everything about Van Horne, my favorite part of this store is that I could custom make a ring. I know other stores can piece together different bands, stones, mounts, etc. but they helped me design this from scratch! Granted, I was very nervous about the final product, but they assured me if i didn't like it they could adjust to make sure I (and my fiance) were completely satisfied. My expectations were far and away exceeded! I would and have recommended Van Horne to many of my peers.

Exquisite Jewelry

My family has been buying jewelry from Van Horne Jewelers for decades. Van Horne carries some of the most beautiful, high quality pieces I have seen in the South Bend/Mishawaka area. The sales associates are attentive and extremely genuine. They make jewelry shopping fun, even for males! In addition to the beautiful jewelry Van Horne carries, its custom designers are phenominal and will custom make anything your hear desires. When looking for beautiful, exquisite, and quality jewelry, Van Horne's is the place to go in South Bend/Mishawaka!

No Way!

When I walked into this store I felt like I walked back in time to the 90's and 80's. All of their jewelry is out of style. The people who work there are snooty and snotty.- like I'm doing them a favor by being there. I'll never shop there!
