Dental Care
In addition to the pain associated with bad teeth and gums, other more general problems can occur secondary to bad oral health. Chronic dental disease is linked with heart, kidney and liver disease.
Vaccination
All cats are required to be vaccinated for rabies by law. Kittens receive one dose of the rabies vaccine as a kitten and then the vaccine is boostered nine to twelve months later. Following this initial set of vaccinations, your cat will be vaccinated every one to three years depending on the type of vaccine used. Please note to qualify for the 3 year vaccination, your cat must receive two vaccine doses nine to twelve months apart and no later. Your pet should have their rabies vaccine boostered if they receive a wound that may have come from another animal even if the current rabies vaccine has not expired.

Nutritional Counseling
Initial exposure to the virus usually results in mild illness which may include fever, depression, gastrointestinal or respiratory disease. This stage of the disease can last days to weeks. Following the initial phase, the cat is usually asymptomatic for several years. Eventually the infected cat will become sick. FIV infected cats can develop opportunistic infections, cancer, neurologic dysfunction, or a general wasting syndrome. Signs include weight loss, persistent or recurrent diarrhea, gingivitis, stomatitis, chronic respiratory disease, lymphadenopathy and chronic skin disease. Ultimately, widespread organ failure occurs, and the cat dies.
Comprehensive Examination
Physical exams are the basis of wellness care as well as our first and foremost tool in identifying illness. Yearly examinations are recommended for all pets and senior and chronically ill pets often benefit from more frequent examinations.

Parasites Treatment and Control
We highly recommend all dogs to be on year round heartworm medication and to be tested for annually for heartworm disease. If you miss giving your dog more than one month of heartworm medication, you should call the office to find out if retesting is recommended before administering additional doses of heartworm preventative. In addition to preventing heartworm disease, the preventatives that we recommend also help to control common gastrointestinal parasites.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
All dogs should receive the DAPP combination vaccine which protects against Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo and Parainfluenza viruses. These are very serious viruses which can be transmitted directly from other dogs, picked up from the environment or transmitted by fomites (like on shoes and clothing). We recommend that after the initial puppy series, this vaccine should be boostered one year later, then every two to three years depending on the health and lifestyle of your pet and the other vaccinations that your pet is receiving.
Pain Management
Keeping your pet comfortable during any procedure is a high priority; therefore we place a strong emphasis on pain management using a combination of medications in the pre-operative, operative and post-operative stages. To help keep your pet warm and comfortable we use warming blankets and heated towels during surgery and postoperatively.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Most reactions to vaccinations are mild and include sneezing, discomfort at the injection site, mild fever and or muscle soreness which usually passes without the need for any treatment. Serious allergic reactions are rare. On very rare occasions, cats can develop a sarcoma at the injection site. This is a malignant tumor that can be hard to remove. Sarcomas can develop weeks to years after a vaccination (and occasionally to other injections). This reaction is rare and is estimated to be less than 3 in 10,000 vaccines administered. The exact cause of this reaction is not yet understood. It is important to monitor vaccination sites and if you notice a lump that you have it checked out ASAP. It is very important to remember that for the general population of cats, the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risk of an adverse reaction occurring.

Leptospirosis Treatment
Infection with the Leptospirosis spirochete is an important cause of acute kidney and liver disease in dogs. Many different animal species including raccoons, skunks, squirrels, opossums, mice, rats, cattle and sheep are potential sources of infection. The infection is passed in the urine and under the right conditions the organism can live in the environment for months.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
The Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), sometimes called the Feline AIDS Virus, is an important feline disease. It is likened to the AIDS virus which affects humans because of the similarities in the two diseases. However, FIV only affects cats.
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
The causes of cystitis vary not only from cat to cat, but can also from one occurrence to another. Although bacterial infections are the most common cause of cystitis in dogs and humans, most cats with cystitis do not have a bacteria infection. Stress plays an important role in many cases of feline cystitis. In addition to hematuria (blood in the urine) some cats will also have crystals or stones. Other cats may have polyps and occasionally tumors.
Urinary Tract Infection Treatment
Surgically changing the cat's urethra makes him more prone to bacterial infections in the bladder and bladder stones. Periodic monitoring for urinary tract infections is recommended. The surgery generally offers a significant benefit for the cat that really needs it.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Diabetes Treatment
Dogs that are over 7 years old (Giant breed dogs over 5) are starting to enter their golden years. Like with your own heath, the more preventative steps you take in general, the better your dog’s health will be. Disease states often progress faster in our pets due to their shorter life spans. You should consider having a semi-annual (twice a year) physical done on your dog to track changes better. In addition, bloodwork and a urinalysis should be done at least once a year to help alert us to possible problems. Some diseases that are very common in our older dogs that can be picked up with these tests are kidney disease, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, hyperadrenocorticism and some cancers. Other less common diseases can be found as well. Please let us know if you would like this additional care.
Thyroid Disease Treatment
The thyroid gland is located in the neck and plays a very important role in regulating the body's rate of metabolism. Hyperthyroidism is a disorder characterized by the overproduction of thyroid hormone and a subsequent increase in the metabolic rate. This is a fairly common disease of older cats. Although the thyroid gland enlarges, it is usually a non-malignant change (benign). Less than 2% of hyperthyroid cases involve malignancy.
Heart Disease Treatment
Two secondary complications of this disease can be significant. These include hypertension and a heart disease called thyrotoxic cardiomyopathy. Hypertension develops as a consequence of the increased pumping pressure of the heart. In some cats, blood pressure can become so high that retinal hemorrhage or detachment will occur resulting in blindness. Heart problems develop because the heart must enlarge and thicken to meet the increased metabolic demands. Both of these problems are reversible with appropriate treatment of the disease.
Kidney Disease Treatment
If mucus, crystals or stones are present, the urethra (the narrow tube carrying urine out of the body) can become obstructed. Urethral obstruction occurs more commonly in male cats due to their narrow urethra. If the obstruction is not relieved within 24-48 hours, most cats will die from kidney failure and the retention of toxins that were not removed by the kidneys. Signs of urethral obstruction are straining to urinate with little or no urine output. Many cats will vocalize when attempting to urinate due to pain. In more advance cases, the cat will be extremely lethargic.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Dogs and cats, like people, are prone to accumulating plaque and tartar, which can lead to severe periodontal disease. Fractured or worn teeth are very common in dogs. Whereas, cats are prone to tooth resorption, a very painful condition unique to cats. All these problems cause our pets a great deal of discomfort and pain as well as putting them at an increased risk for other medical problems. Dental disease is also a common cause of bad breath.

Wound and Fracture Care
FIV is transmitted primarily through bite wounds that occur in cat fights, consequently it is most common in intact male cats. Other interactions of cats, such as sharing common food and water bowls or grooming each other are an uncommon source of transmission.

Veterinary Surgery
Spaying and Neutering
Prevention of FIV infection is best accomplished by neutering male cats and keeping cats indoors. There is also a vaccine for FIV, however it is not known if the vaccine will protect against all subtypes of the virus. Since vaccinated cats will test positive on the FIV antibody test, they should be microchipped to ensure that if they end up in a shelter, they are not euthanized because of a positive test.

Laboratory Services
FeLV infection is diagnosed by a blood test. Although there are several different types of tests, the most common test is an ELISA test which can often be run during an office visit. It detects the FeLV at any stage of infection, but the test can take up to four weeks after exposure to become positive. Due to the serious nature of the disease, it is recommended to confirm a positive test with a second test. This is usually an IFA test which is performed at a laboratory.
