Primary Care
We ask our patients to be responsible for obtaining referrals - if needed - from their primary care physicians. Our staff will assist where possible; however, we appreciate your calling your insurance company directly (the number on your card) to determine if your specific plan requires a referral.
Electrocardiogram
A preoperative clearance and EKG with your primary care provider within 30 days of the scheduled surgery is required by the anesthesiologist. You will be given a time frame to schedule an appointment with your primary care provider and a form to take with you to that appointment so your provider has the necessary information to perform the preoperative evaluation and where to send it once completed. You do not have to bring anything back to the office after seeing your primary care provider.

Glaucoma
An eye condition that develops when too much fluid builds up inside the eye. The increase in pressure can damage the optic nerve; if this continues untreated, glaucoma will cause loss of vision. There are usually no noticeable early symptoms of glaucoma so it is important that you are checked regularly, especially if you have a family history of the disease.
Ophthalmology
Philip R. Chung, M.D. is a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist and Surgeon, and Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He grew up in Potomac, Maryland and after completing his studies in California, Texas, and New York, he returned to northern Virginia to set up this practice in Gainesville.

Laser Eye Surgery
A very common problem that can have many causes, from an overly dry or dusty environment to simple aging. Spending long hours in front of a computer screen, temporary inflammations, hormonal changes that come with menopause, contact lens wear, eye surgery – all can result in a problem with dry eyes. Although serious complications are not common, if left untreated dry eyes can damage the surface of the cornea.
Cataracts
CATARACTS are a common condition in which the normally clear lens of the eye becomes increasingly cloudy, resulting in decreased distance and reading vision and glare with sunlight or headlights. You may notice your vision is fuzzy or cloudy and colors appear muted or dull.
Cataract Surgery
Monitored Anesthesia Care (not general anesthesia) is used for cataract surgery. You may not drive for 24 hours after having anesthesia. Therefore, you are required to have a responsible adult drive you to surgery and bring you home afterwards. In the event you have an adverse reaction to the anesthesia, someone should stay with you at home following surgery up until your follow-up appointment the next morning. Someone should drive you to an early morning (between 8 and 8:45 am) follow-up appointment at Dr. Chung’s office the day after surgery.
Eye Exam
When you schedule an annual eye exam, you will need to bring your glasses with you if you wear them. The doctor may dilate your eyes during the exam; if so, your vision will be somewhat blurry and sensitive to light for a few hours. You may want to have someone drive you to this appointment.
