Regardless of the difficulties others' reviews have talked about with the office staff or their policies, the DOCTOR at this place is fantastic. My partner is legally blind with a very rare condition, and this Doctor has been the only one in his lifetime that has been able to get him into disposable contact lenses. The convenience this has allowed him, after over 45 years of needing intense vision correction, has been life changing. He no longer has to worry about losing his only contact lens. The doctor is incredibly thorough and gifted.

As for the office staff, they seem polite enough. But, they have to stay afloat by selling their glasses. Measuring pupilary distance requires someone to sit with the person and spend time, essentially, providing the fitting for the glasses. Why should they provide that service so that you will then go online and purchase the glasses? That is like going to a bridal store, asking for a fitting, getting the measurements and then going online to buy the dress.

I know that they took a lot of time to help my neighbor's child get his replacement glasses through medicaid, which required them to deal with that insurance company. They went out of the way to make sure he was able to get the replacement because medicaid was at first rejecting. So, as for them dealing with insurance companies, they had no problem with it when I asked for them to help.

In summation, and to me what matters the most, the doctor there is the best. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

I called my Eye Care insurance provider to see where I could be seen for my yearly exam and glasses and chose University Opticians. What a MISTAKE.

As I was being checked in for my appointment I was told by a man named Josh, that according to their computer I do NOT have insurance coverage for an exam available so if we continue it will be full cost. I was extremely upset after driving 30 miles to get there. I asked why they had not prepared by getting pre-approval for the visit. I explained we had spoke 3 times by phone before and if there was a problem it should have been addressed then. I informed him that if he call my provider I AM covered 100% for the exam INCLUDING the glasses. At this point another man came into the scene and took over. Josh sat in the back ground watching and listening. I was being told they don't call insurance companies on appointments. I continued to plea that someone get on the phone and call my provider. The information University Opticians has is NOT correct. The man eventually looked over the computer that Josh was using earlier and got on the phone to call my provider.

While sitting on hold on his phone, the man asked me what my co-pay is and I told him $0. He stated the computer told him it was $35. I explained that is also NOT correct and he can confirm this as well on the call. By the end of his call it was confirmed by my insurance that I was 100% correct. I was covered 100% for the exam, including the glasses and with $0 co-pay.

This is when I thought I would get an apology of some sort. NO not at all. I felt to try to turn the situation a little more comfortable, I would actually apologize. I did so and explained that I was not trying to cause any problem. I told him that I am disabled and can't deal with situations like this. That I don't understand how others do. He than rolled his eyes and rudely told me to "Quit complaining". Stating that I was making the situation worse.

He walked away to inform the doctor that I was ready to be seen. I looked over to Josh, who was still just sitting in the background watching, and I told him I was leaving. As the other man came back into the room I told them I wouldn't give them a penny of my money and refuse any service from them. As I was doing this, the man pulled out the phone and got on it. Was he calling the police? I walked out the door. If you want to be treated like CRAP by UNPROFESSIONALS, this is the place!

I drove down the street to Eye Doctors Optical Outlet 3324 W University Ave #A Gainesville, FL 32607 Ph# 352-240-0801 where I was greeted with a smile and received the friendly service a customer deserves. What a relief! Angela is great and will treat you right!

I had to wait forty minutes after my appointed time before the doctor saw me. I didn't mind this, considering it was the end of my work day, and I had nowhere else to be afterward. That being said, a lack of punctuality could be frustrating, if not detrimental, when you have other appointments waiting. While there, the staff was pleasant, showing me glasses even though I planned on purchasing them online.

Back home, online, I began to order my glasses, inputting the values given to me on my prescription. Yet, one value--the "PD" (pupillary distance)--was left blank. I called University Opticians back a few days later requesting the 'PD' value and they said they "could not release the information". Not over the phone; not in person. As to why, the person whom I spoke to didn't know (nor did he decide to ask for me). Basically, it is an attempt to control the eyeglass market by economically binding the patient to the optometrist. When pointing this out, the man said this wasn't the case, and that I could go to any eyeglass company and they would measure my PD for me. Yes they would, provided I buy my glasses from their store (my problem to begin with). Anyone with glasses knows that places likes Lenscrafters and Visionworks charge an exorbitant rate for lenses. Luckily, the company whom I purchased my glasses from (Warby Parker) directed me to a program which takes pictures of your face thereby measuring your 'PD'. With hardly any thanks to University Opticians, I will have affordable, functional glasses.
