- General Info:
- My name is Wally Schnalle (it rhymes) and I've been playing drums for over 35 years. For the past 12 years, I have been passing on what I've learned as a drummer as a teacher. I enjoy teaching very much but still perform on a regular basis as both a band leader and a sideman to many wonderful musicians. I do play in many genres, including Latin, funk and rock, but the bulk of my performances are jazz and fusion. I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Jazz Performance from San Jose State University. I have also been the recipient of a California Arts Council Artist-in-Residence Grant to teach a Multi-Cultural drumming curriculum at Arts Magnet School Lincoln High School in San Jose. I am also the Music Editor for Drum magazine. Those duties, over the past 10 years include, transcribing and engraving all the notation included in that magazine as well as doing interviews and product reviews. I have a well-equipped private studio in the Mission San Jose area of Fremont, California. Lessons are $95 for each set of 4 one-hour private lessons.
- With every student from beginning to advanced my goal is to concentrate and maintain three areas of study. These include technique, reading and 4-limb coordination. The bulk of the technique study is focused on developing a useful approach and facilities including speed and vocabulary. Reading studies including snare drum etudes as well as drum set notation. The largest area of study is certainly the 4-limb coordination. These include idiomatic studies like Rock, Funk, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, Jazz, Hip-Hop and many more. As every student possesses different abilities and desires this is not a ridged curriculum. I tailor the topics to suit the needs of the student while maintaining a focus on all three areas to develop the facilities in the drummer to create his or her own distinctive drumming voice.
