Dental Examination
The patient often becomes aware of the condition during a routine dental examination. Your dentist will be able to recognize the signs of bruxism during a dental exam and may even suggest further analysis of your bruxism, such as recommending an overnight stay at a sleep laboratory.
Oral Cancer Screening
You can help prevent oral cancer by abstaining from all forms of tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption. Because successful treatment and rehabilitation are dependent on early detection, it is extremely important to regularly check your mouth for changes in appearance and see your dentist for an oral cancer screening and regular checkup at least every six months. Survival rates greatly increase the earlier oral cancer is discovered and treated. During your next dental visit, ask your dentist to do an oral cancer screening.

Teeth Cleaning
Next to daily brushing and flossing (including water flossing with devices like the Water-Pik), the most important step you can take to prevent dental disease is regular cleanings and exams at the dental office.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride has proven to be a safe and effective cavity fighter for over 60 years. It is available in many forms: in the water supply, in tooth pastes, and at the dental office. Fluoride in the dental office historically has been administered to children, but in recent years it has become apparent that office administered fluoride treatments are even more important for our senior citizens.
Dental Sealants
Sealants are used to prevent decay on the biting surfaces of molars and are usually used for children. The sealant consists of a flowable resin which is bonded to the molar. Usually no drilling is involved. Sealants are an excellent preventive measure.

Crowns
Dental restorations restore the function, integrity, and morphology of missing tooth structure, which can be caused by caries or external trauma, such as chipping or cracking a tooth. Fabrication of a crown (a type of dental restoration) usually requires two dental visits. The first visit involves an examination of the tooth to determine how it should be restored and preparation of the tooth for the restoration; this visit may include a core build-up (sometimes requiring a post), fabrication of a temporary crown, and making an impression to be sent to the laboratory. Overdentures
Those who have lost all or most of their teeth are candidates for complete dentures, which replace all of the teeth. Those who have some natural teeth remaining may consider a partial denture, which can fill in the space created by missing teeth and prevent other teeth from changing position. This type of denture usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, which is held in place by a metal framework and clasps, or natural-looking connectors called precision attachments. Conventional dentures are placed in the mouth after any remaining teeth are removed and the tissue has healed, which may take a few months. Immediate dentures are placed in the mouth the same day that the remaining teeth are removed. This means you won’t have to go without teeth during the healing period, but your denture may need to be relined or remade after healing is complete. Overdentures fit over a small number of remaining teeth or implants after they have been prepared by the dentist. Your dentist will usually try to preserve your remaining natural teeth. Saving these teeth can help preserve your jawbone and provide support for the denture.
