General Info: In 2016, Briarwood Animal Hospital celebrated 55 years of continuous service. In 1961, Dr. Hugh Ward opened Briarwood Animal Hospital and although some of the faces have changed, our commitment to patient care remains the focus of our practice. In 1978, we opened Millcreek Reservoir Animal Clinic to serve the reservoir and Rankin county area. Our Millcreek practice was the first veterinary clinic in the reservoir area and continues to grow to better serve the area.

Vaccination
The age and overall health of an animal normally determines how often they are seen at Briarwood Animal Hospital. Young puppies and kittens are recommended to be seen yearly after they have received their initial vaccinations and have been spayed or neutered. Adult pets are normally seen for yearly exams, with blood work completed as need. Senior animals may be recommended to come in twice yearly, while bloodwork is recommended each year after they are geriatric.
Comprehensive Examination
Blood work is important for pets prior to any surgery, to determine if they may have an underlying issue that cannot be seen during physical examinations. These values are also important for sick animals that are simply not their usual playful selves to insure they are as healthy on the inside as they appear on the outside. For the safety of your pet and other animals boarding at Briarwood, all animals are recommended to be current on the vaccination schedule prior to their stay with us. Dogs and cats are required to be currently vaccinated against rabies. Dogs it is recommended that they be up to date on bordetella (kennel cough), distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza, parvovirus, and leptospirosis vaccinations. For cats, it is recommended that they be current on their feline leukemia, rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia, and chlamydia vaccinations. If your pet is due to be vaccinated, or if you are unsure of their current status, please contact our boarding facility four weeks prior to your pet’s planned stay to ensure they are properly vaccinated and protected.

Briarwood Animal Hospital has recently invested in the most advanced in-clinic diagnostic laboratory available in veterinary medicine. Our new laboratory allows our caring doctors to run blood work for pets, and obtain results within minutes to begin treatment as necessary. You can get results while you wait on our analyzers to provide blood chemistry results, complete blood counts (CBCs), electrolyte levels, and thyroid values within half an hour.
X-Ray
Briarwood Animal Hospital provides all types of diagnostic services including one of the most useful to a veterinarian—radiography. Radiography is more commonly known as an x-ray. X-rays allow a veterinarian to identify broken bones, internal bleeding, organ enlargements, tumors, degenerative joint diseases and foreign objects that have been ingested by a pet. Briarwood Animal Hospital has expanded our radiography services to the most advanced system available in veterinary medicine: digital radiography. This cutting-edge system allows our experienced veterinarians to take multiple images at a time to avoid lengthy radiography processes. Images are displayed almost instantly and any corrections needed are done in a timelier manner than in previous years. In the case that your pet may be referred to a specialist, our practice can easily email the images to the specialty center for their perusal.
