- It all began on a cold November morning in 1969. A young man who had never preached a sermon was accompanied by his wife, who was six months pregnant with their first child, to Florence, South Carolina. The young couple had no idea what God was about to do but were eager to find out. The burning desire in Bill Monroe's heart was to start a church where people would come to know Jesus Christ as Savior on a regular basis, a church that would make a difference in eternity!
