Our Chinese tea was equally hot and a bit sweet, which helped tame the sweetness so prevalent in every entre choice consumed. It might help to label the dishes on the small buffet line. I knew what dishes sat before me, while my partner had to jab with tongs just to discern the main ingredients, all of which were dry, even at peak lunch hours on a Saturday. We liked the Kung Pao chicken, the chicken on a stick, the fried rice, and the vegetable egg roll. The desserts -- such as the melon balls and brownies -- were fresh. But some attention to classic Chinese sweets is due for all of the restaurants I visited. The takeout and delivery from Little House's regular menu is superb, but the $5.95 lunch buffet proves that you truly get what you pay for -- even without MSG.
All the meats and seafood we tried -- from the sesame chicken to the shrimp in garlic sauce -- were overcooked. Perhaps they were erring on the side of safety, but the cooks replenished the table constantly with flavorful yet dry renditions of Mongolian beef, sweet-and-sour pork, and General Tso's chicken. The steamed rice was nice and sticky sweet, while the fried rice was undercooked. The winner at China Star Super Buffet is the Mongolian barbecue station, with raw meats and veggies cooked to order. The renditions of spicy beef with broccoli and garlicky baby bok choy are worth the trip. Dessert? Custard with a film on it, half-melted ice cream, and sweet bean-paste buns older than Confucius.
Several Years ago I used to only go to those fast food type Chinese restaurants, until one day my mom convinced me to try Empress of China. I have been hooked ever since.....that was over 7 years ago. I have tried other Chinese restaurants throught the state and never have been able to find any that could match the quality of Empress. I would highly recommend the General Tso Chicken, the Almond Chicken, and a signature dish they call "Empress Double Sticks". It is teriaki chicken and steak on a skewer. They have a great all you can eat buffet on sunday afternoons that features those items.
