The Wonder

Lake Superior grandeur enveloping 21 islands. Sandstone cliffs, hidden sea caves, boreal forest and meandering trails.

The Adventures

Boating, camping, fishing, kayaking, hiking, scuba diving, hunting, guided lighthouse tours, summer campfire programs

One for the Bucket List

Kayaking the sea caves of the Apostles. Mother Nature has carved some magnificent formations throughout the park, and you can enjoy all the sculpted-stone handiwork up-close by paddling into areas otherwise inaccessible by boat. Kayak around Devils Island, Sand Island or along the mainland about a quarter-mile from Meyers Beach (with a good launch point at the end of Meyer's Road) to find the park's most prominent sea caves.

Seasons and Hours

The park and islands are open to visitors year round, although weather, especially during winter months, may prevent access to all areas. The mainland Bayfield Visitor Center is open all year (except holidays), but the lighthouses and visitor centers on several of the islands are only open from mid-June to mid-September.

Getting There

To get to the islands make a reservation with Apostle Islands Cruise Service, which is the authorized concession for the park. According to the NPS, the company offers "a variety of narrated sightseeing cruises, island shuttles and charter trips to islands and offshore locations throughout the national lakeshore. The most popular is the 55-mile 'Grand Tour' which travels through the heart of the Apostle Islands archipelago. Trips leave from Bayfield daily from late May to mid-October." Apostle Island Cruise Service also will transport your canoe or kayak to the islands for an extra fee.

Public boating docks are available on 13 of the park's islands, and overnight docking is available on a first-come, first-served basis, for a fee.

Let Your Adventure Begin

Fill Your Bucket List With Bewilderness

America the beautiful. You got that right. From the skytops of the world's tallest trees to the underwater color-play of tropical reefs, the National Park Service (NPS) oversees hundreds of parks and areas to conserve many of our country's most precious natural wonders and living treasures.

Otherworldly landscapes. Thriving wildlife. Hidden, wicked-cool marvels of time and nature. Humbling, sweeping views that are not just breathtaking but truly breath-giving, so inspiring you might find them. Whether you're a mobile-mad workaholic, family trooper or just a mid-life meditator, we hope you have time to enjoy it all.

Affordable Adventure

Fewer than half of the national parks charge entrance fees, which usually range from $5 to $25 (often just per vehicle). Children 16 and under are always admitted for free. Daily fees for camping usually range between $10 and $20 per party.

The NPS offers annual America the Beautiful Passes that cover entrance fees at any national park.
