One for the Bucket List
Kayaking the sea caves of the Apostles. Mother Nature has carved some magnificent formations throughout the park, and you can enjoy all the sculpted-stone handiwork up-close by paddling into areas otherwise inaccessible by boat. Kayak around Devils Island, Sand Island or along the mainland about a quarter-mile from Meyers Beach (with a good launch point at the end of Meyer's Road) to find the park's most prominent sea caves.
Seasons and Hours
The park and islands are open to visitors year round, although weather, especially during winter months, may prevent access to all areas. The mainland Bayfield Visitor Center is open all year (except holidays), but the lighthouses and visitor centers on several of the islands are only open from mid-June to mid-September.
To get to the islands make a reservation with Apostle Islands Cruise Service, which is the authorized concession for the park. According to the NPS, the company offers "a variety of narrated sightseeing cruises, island shuttles and charter trips to islands and offshore locations throughout the national lakeshore. The most popular is the 55-mile 'Grand Tour' which travels through the heart of the Apostle Islands archipelago. Trips leave from Bayfield daily from late May to mid-October." Apostle Island Cruise Service also will transport your canoe or kayak to the islands for an extra fee.
Public boating docks are available on 13 of the park's islands, and overnight docking is available on a first-come, first-served basis, for a fee.
