(1 of 10)Chopper Off-Trail to Remote Slopes: Heli-Skiing
Ruby Mountain Heli-Experience - Lamoille, NV More Info
Imagine the Thrill
Revel in a snow-sporting experience that's sometimes described as "sight-skiing" through a National Geographic spread. Chopper over beautiful alpine vistas and choose your own drop locations on pristine slopes, whether you want to speed through trees, steeps or wide open bowls. Heli-skiing isn't just a one-shot deal, but a day-long adventure with multiple drops and runs. One note: Sorry, you don't actually jump out of a moving helicopter James Bond-style. So leave your stunt double at home.
Make the Adventure
For more than 30 years, Joe Royer and his family have taken skiers into northern Nevada's Ruby Mountains. You can heli-ski in the great white wonder on their all-day Heli-Experiences, which offer roughly five to six hours of time on- and over-mountain, weather permitting. Each group is accompanied by a GPS-equipped heli-ski guide with a thorough knowledge of the Ruby range, and trip packages include all meals, lodging and gear. About half of Ruby Mountain Heli-Experience's clients are families, with the youngest skiers usually in their teens. The heli-skiing season lasts from January through April, depending on snow conditions and Mother Nature.
