Previously, I told friends that this restaurant was a viable alternative to the Mexicantown restaurants in Detroit. No more. You must pay $1.50 for "extra" cheese. I have encountered no other Mexican restaurants that scrimp on cheese. The help is disinterested at best and rude at worst. I ordered a chicken enchilada dinner with extra cheese carry-out. When I got home, I found I had cheese enchiladas with extra cheese. Because I was still fuming over having to pay more for "adequate" cheese, I didn't notice what I was eating until halfway thru. When I called the restaurant to inform them of their mistake, I was told that the cook said he prepared chicken. It was 9:58pm, two minutes before closing. I was told that unless I brought the meal back right then (to resolve the problem before the shift was over), the matter was done. So I had to jump in my car, drive to the restaurant and pick up a replacement meal that I was now too full to consume. WHATEVER! I live in Southfield but work in Mexicantown. In the future, if I want Mexican food for dinner, I will pick it up at Mexican Village, X... (you know the one), Armando's, etc.
(Note: this is a no star rating)
After tonight (1/27/12) my family is done with this place completely. For the most part the meals are good but this place has a serious service problem and a staff that just doesn't care.
First let me say that we ended our "dining in" with this place months ago. The complete service is poor and unless you physically grab your wait person, you will basically get what you get when you get it. Takes for ever to get your order placed, forget about getting chips and refills, and if your with a large group, forget about it!
Our last dine in experience ended when the gaucamole came out with knats buzzing around it and then I had to go up to complain cause my waitperson couldn't be found and I was greeted with an attitude about the issue, with no offer to replace it so we gathered our things and left......Party of 6 out the door!
So ocassionally we would order carry out.....I refuse to dine in any longer......TONIGHT, we place a carry out.....and like most carry outs, again our order was taken and not made. We arrive to pick it up and its not ready, they claimed they tried to call us back to comfirm the order.....LIE.....they don't ask for a number when you place the order, they use caller i.d., and they couldn't figure out what number to call because the person that topok the order didn't write our number on the slip. Customer service is everything, especially on a long day when you need a break and just want to be serviced and have a nice nite out......AVOID THIS PLACE.....the only thing you well get from this place is STRESS......don't believe me? Go here once a week for 5 weeks and I'll bet you a dinner 3 of the 5 .....no-no-no......4 of the 5 experiences will be less than pleasant.

Admitted that chips & salsa are good, service is decent. However, the entrees are overcooked. No way is this Mexican food comparable to what you get in Mexican Village in Detroit. Also, you definitely won't get a buzz off the Margaritas at this restaurant -- teguila is barely perceptible.

This is by far the BEST mexican around. Forget about driving to Detroit for Mexican Village simply stop by Camelia's. To start with the chips and salsa are to die for. They always are hot and crunchy and the hot and I can't live without their salsa. I eat here at least 3-4 times per week. The staff is so freindly and you really get that home feeling. The enchaladas are amazing if your looking for healthier food they have a mexican kababob which is big enough for two. Great prices even better portion sizes! You can't go wrong and they also have really really good drink specials! You might even have to buy some salsa and take it home!!!

Best Mexican in Michigan as far as I'm concerned. I moved here from california about five years ago and have tried many Mexican restaurants in Detroit and the metro area. Camelias is the best, comparable if not better than California. I saw other reviews about the service and I have to disagree. I was there friday night and it was jammin yet my service was not lacking and my food came out timely. Beware of the strawberry chimi cheesecake its addictive.

Okay, so I have been going to this restaurant ever since they were in the plaza next door. Of course, they had a couple of things they needed to improve on but I have always loved the food. Lately it seems that the service is improving and the wait for dinner has been cut shorter. I have heard that their new management is really focused on building up the business and that any comments were appreciated. Its sad to see other people have such a bad experience there when I have had great service in such a long time. It is also true that the service was slower although last Sunday was very busy and I fell I left in record time. As far as i'm concerned, my visits have been great and if they are already focused on improving, I will keep recommending this place.

You will not find better salsa anywhere. It's loaded with fresh ingredients and lots of garlic! All the food is fantastic! Some items can be on the greasy side because they use loads of cheese, but that's what Mexican is all about! I recommend anything with chicken, it's not greasy and it's shredded and spiced so well. Their service is pretty SLOW though, so if you're going plan to be there a while and wait, but it's definately worth it.

I went to this place twice. The first time it took about 2 hours to get through our meal because we waited over an hour for our entrees. They were busy! So, we decided to give it another shot after waiting several months for them to get their act together. I still waited a long time for refills on beverages, salsa and service. I ended up finding a piece of thin plastic in my enchilada as well. Almost like a sliver of plastic similar to the texture and density of the plastic bag bread comes in? After that I was done! I won't go back. Their salsa is awesome though. I will miss it!
