Shame on Chicagoans for not reviewing Jim's yet because it's the best! I'm a native Chicagoan who had the opportunity to visit my home town in 2007 as a "tourist" after many years of living in the Southeast. I went to the Taste (which was a madhouse of a crowd) and I visited some places I had never been before, one of which included Jim's Original for the Maxwell Street Polish. Yes, this is THEE place to go for the real Maxwell Street Polish experience. I got the original polish, which included the large sausage, pile of grilled sweet onions, mustard and hot peppers that will light up your life but ohh, it's damn good. I sat in the car out front of the spot eating the tasty meal with fries on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in July before flying out. If you are a native too, or a visitor, do not leave without going by this place. It's truly a legend. Read more about Jim's Original here: http://www.jimsoriginal.com/.
I grew up on this hot dogs, and the texture and flavor are like no where else. I've been going here for 52 years and it's still the same stock! They are fantastic! And the fries are also 'out of this world'! They are fresh, hand-cut fries, and they have a constant fresh stream, because they are always so busy. Also for less than $3, you get a lot for your money. Always plenty of fries. They aren't stingy with them. The neighborhood is rough-but you won't have to linger here long. But they do have adequate booths were you can sit. There's no air-conditioning, but the fans are more than efficient. I absolutely love this place, and hope they will be here 50 years to come. It is an extremely relaxed environment-but as I say, it's in a rough neighborhood, so definitely watch your back, and your purses, and or pockets! Sandra L. Stewart
This is a great place for most occasions. My dad works there so I've been there a few times. The selection of food is and wine is great. Though I am not old enough to drink, I notice that they have some really good wine selections. There are many things to talk about this place. But I'll stick with the food and let you figure out the rest..... Everything is great on the menu except for one thing. It isn't that the ribs are bad, but if you want great ribs you go to Smokin Woody's down the street on Lincoln ave, or the long gone Smoke House. But other than that everything is recommended. My personal favs starting with the Appetizers, cheese sticks, or Calamari. Of the meals, the burger is one of the best, and the steaks.
