2/24/14 To Whom It May Concern: This record is in response to a complaint filed by Mr. X. I first met the pet, herein referred to as “Cat”, at the end of January. The client was unhappy with the treatment received at his regular vet and came to me for a second opinio...moren. Cat had been vomiting and had diarrhea every single day for more than 30 days. Cat had already lost over 4 pounds and seemed very depressed. All lab work and radiographs done elsewhere were inconclusive. We scheduled an ultrasound to evaluate intestinal integrity while avoiding surgery. A diagnosis of lymphoma was made based on aspirates performed with ultrasound. This was a disseminated and very advanced case. At this time is it was advised that the owner take Cat to the oncologist for further assistance. The owner declined. The prognosis was grave and the owner was advised that no treatment would be effective. Euthanasia at this time was declined and the owner elected palliative care at home. At this time a house call for final euthanasia was discussed. I do not do house calls, but I was willing to make an exception for the comfort of the cat. The owner was advised that in order for me to make a house call – I would require plenty of advance notice and the timing would be flexible as I do not leave work until all patient care is done… which may be 5:30 or 8:30 pm depending on my case load. At this time Cat was sent home on meds. Within 5 days the owner reports that Cat is now being force fed every day and vomits everything she eats and continues to have profuse diarrhea. The owner declined euthanasia on this day, so I called a compounding pharmacy to have special meds ordered for Cat for vomiting and diarrhea. The next day the owner reported continued vomiting and diarrhea, and again declined euthanasia. The next day was a Friday. I received a phone message around noon that Cat was doing OK and there was no house call needed at this time, maybe next Monday. The client claims that he called later in the day and spoke to another staff member and scheduled an afterhour appointment at his home for euthanasia. My staff is not authorized to schedule after hours appointments. The front desk has no way of knowing when my work with patients in the hospital will be finished. When I got to work Saturday morning I received a fax from the local emergency vet. Their clinic is open all night with a veterinarian ON DUTY. This emergency vet routinely handles most of my client’s’ after hours needs. The fax states that this client called them and insisted that they phone me to come to their house right away. They offered for the client to bring them the cat for euthanasia – the client declined. Meanwhile the client is posting all manner of claims on the internet and Facebook – to the extent of harassment. My staff called the client first thing Saturday morning to check on Cat – she was told it was not our concern and then the profanity was so vile that my staff member hung up the phone. I personally called the client after the days’ appointments to express condolences on the loss of Cat. No one answered and I left a voice message. I understand that Mr. X was upset and distressed over the loss of a pet. I can overlook all of the rude and negative comments made during that initial loss. This is beginning to look like harassment and defamation of character. Please realize that this cat was terminally ill for nearly 3 months. She was nauseous with vomiting and diarrhea EVERY DAY. She was being force fed for days in spite of the vomiting. The client declined humane euthanasia multiple times before this night. This WAS NOT AN EMERGENCY. If this cat suffered at all, it was not by my hand, but by an owner that could not make that decision that it would be more merciful to let the cat be euthanized. view less
