ome people plan things out carefully and others jump into the deep end before they even learn how to swim. Cute As A Bug owner, Ashley Porta is one of the latter; in less than a year, Ashley left the New School in Manhattan, got married to Hans from the South American country of Colombia, honeymooned in the southern hemisphere, discovered Encinitas on a short trip to San Diego, decided to open a business here and only a couple of days later signed a lease on a retail space and within another 90 days opened the resale shop for children’s clothes and mother’s maternity clothing. And, it’s working. Ashley assures one she is older than she looks, but the perky freckled “Roja” red head exudes “good vibes” and if sheer optimism alone is enough to succeed in business, then Ashley is on her way to millions, if not, billions of dollars. Not that her studies in “Dance” and “Psychology” weren’t good training for running a retail business, certainly small business people have to be extremely flexible, must stand on their tip toes often and on an hourly basis must make time to analyze new customers and quickly determine what their potential client wants followed by a quick plan on “how” to get if for them.

Kids get creative at The Cove Described both as an “interactive creativity lab for kids” and “A Place for imaginative Learning,” The Cove is the new 21st Century model for drop-in arts education for children. Owners, Erin Paris and Jennifer Trevino—the former a public school teacher, the latter a private school teacher whom met through their husbands— decried the loss of training in the arts in the public school system today. Brainstorming about what could be done led them to design the business-model of The Cove. Instead of just hiring a babysitter, The Cove allows parents who have errands or duties to attend to, to drop their children off for several hours and have them instructed in a variety of artistic disciplines; including the programming of robots, filming self-authored stories with ‘green screen’ technology and video, working in the impressive Macintosh Computer Lab with Adobe Photoshop, plus, there is music, painting and much more; including birthday parties, special events, drop-in art, temporary childcare and ‘parent’s night out’.
Scotty Coyote and his crew did an outstanding job in designing and completing our paving and landscaping project. The landscaping design was the most innovative proposal that we received. The project started in our front yard with replacement and redesign of our concrete driveway, walkways, borders, planters with pavers. Also plants, flowers and landscape lighting were added. We were so pleased with the front yard that we decided to have Coyote Construction redo our back yard with the same great results. Every member of the the entire team was very professional.
