Crowns
An opening is made in the crown of the tooth. Very small instruments are used to remove the pulp from the canals and to clean and shape the space for filling. After the space has been cleaned and shaped, the root canals are filled with a rubber-like material called "gutta percha". Last, a temporary filling is placed in the tooth to close the opening. When the root canal is completed, you must return to your general dentist to have a crown or other restoration placed on the tooth to protect and restore it to full function.

Root Canal Treatment
You may find yourself asking: What is an Endodontist? Endodontics as a specialty is perhaps best known for root canal therapy treatment. All dentists, including your general dentist, received training in endodontic treatment in dental school. General dentists can perform endodontic treatment along with other dental procedures, but they often refer patients needing root canal therapy to an Endodontist.
Apicoectomy
Typically a root canal can be used to fix injured teeth, but in certain circumstances a surgical procedure is needed. An apicoectomy is a simple procedure that involves an incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone surrounding any inflamed tissue. During this procedure, the damaged tissue is removed along with the end of the root. A filling is put in its place to prevent infection.

Dr. Austin Carr is originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Tennessee before attending Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. After dental school, Dr. Carr completed a one-year advanced education in general dentistry residency at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. As a dental officer in the Air Force, Dr. Carr was stationed in South Korea and Washington D.C. Following his time in the military, Dr. Carr came to the University of Louisville for the graduate program in Endodontics. When not practicing dentistry, he enjoys running, golf, and spending time with his wife and daughter.
