Absolutely horrible experience with these people and I didn't even get a chance to visit the shelter. My mother's dog was hit and killed by a car on Christmas Eve. We wanted to find another pup as a companion to her 3-year old mix who had gotten very close to the one that passed.
We found a huge ad in The Oklahoman which stated "come see us, over 350 dogs for adoption!". We thought great! When headed there today and was almost to Guthrie when we couldn't locate the specific area so we decided to call. Well.. This is how that call went:
Me: "Hello, I was just calling for your location"
Them: "What are you wanting?! Adopt a dog or cat, drop off an animal, what?!"
Me: "We were looking to adopt"
Them: "OK. Dog cat, big small, young old, what!?"
Me: "ummmm, I'm not sure I guess a black female, small?"
Them: "Yeah, well, all of our dogs are over 40 pounds, so."
Me: "Ok, well could you please give me your location?"
Them: "We don't have what you want."
Me: "So you are really not going to give me your address"
Them: "No, we don't have what you want so we have to be careful"
Wow.... I thought I had been played a cruel joke on or something. Are these people kidding me? Is it April Fool's Day? It's two days after Christmas so it can't be April Fools! I love all animals. Maybe that 50 pound white 18-year old dog they had suffering in a cage would have been the one. How the hell am I supposed to know exactly what I am looking for? Yes, I get there are people out there who get dogs to harm, use as bait dogs and so on but I am 8-months pregnant looking for a dog because I watched my mother's get hit and killed in the street on Christmas Eve. One look at me and you would understand my story. I’m obviously not running a pit ring in my house.
These people have no heart, no soul and have absolutely no business being in the animal "rescue" business. I am appalled and sickened by the way I was treated and have nothing but a sore heart and compassion for ALL of those poor animals that are being left in cages to rot because these people have no idea how to help them or people like me looking for them. The OK Humane Society was kind, compassionate and had no problem with us coming by to take a look at their pups. I have the feeling "Free to Live" is owned by a hoarder and I would suggest they be shut down and the animals be transmitted to a facility that is experienced in animal welfare. Sad, sad, sad...
