Dental Examination
Regular dental exams and cleanings allows the doctors at Pediatric Dentistry of East Lansing to catch early signs of dental problems and can determine if there might be potential for future issues that may affect your child’s bite or tooth alignment. From there she can properly treat them and educate your child to help them build good dental habits that will last a lifetime.
X-rays
Radiographs (or X-Rays) are an essential part of our diagnostic protocol. Without them, dental conditions may go undetected. Dental X-Rays detect much more than dental cavities, and they allow the dentist to evaluate growth and development, bone health, pathology, and trauma. At Pediatric Dentistry of East Lansing, we use the latest dental X-ray technology with very minimal exposure.

Teeth Cleaning
For your child’s first visit to our office, our board certified children’s dentist will do a comprehensive examination. This includes looking at your child’s teeth along with the supporting structures of the gums and their bite. We address any questions you or your child have on pediatric dentistry. Your child will then receive a dental cleaning and fluoride treatment. Radiographs will be taken if necessary. Throughout, our dedicated children’s specialist will ensure your child has a positive first experience at the pediatric dentist.
Fluoride Treatment
Teeth are composed of many tiny pieces called molecules that attach to each other. These tiny pieces are constantly breaking apart throughout the day and reforming depending on our diet. Fluoride can be thought of as a “glue” for these pieces by keeping the molecules more tightly bound together and less prone to breaking apart. Topical fluoride treatment is effective in protecting children’s teeth and reducing cavities.
Dental Sealants
Think of a tooth’s top (chewing) surface as mountains with many grooves. When your child eats, food gets caught in those grooves. Although daily brushing is essential, applying a dental sealant will enhance the ability to keep those hard-to-reach areas clean. A dental sealant flows into the grooves, “sealing” the tooth and reducing the probability of cavities.
Space Maintainers
Space maintenance may be necessary if a baby tooth is lost prematurely. The space maintainer holds the space necessary for the future eruption of the permanent dentition. Without a space maintainer, the area needed for the permanent tooth to erupt may be reduced by the eruption of neighboring adult teeth.

Crowns
Also known as a “cap”, is recommended by our doctors when decay or fractures are too large to withstand forces from chewing. Once decay is removed, the crown will be cemented over your child’s remaining tooth structure allowing the tooth to hold space for proper growth and development. Our doctors use mercury-free silver crowns on the back teeth and cosmetic, tooth-colored crowns on front teeth. OR Our doctors use multiple types of crowns, and depending on your child’s needs we’ll evaluate the most appropriate crown.
Restorative Dentistry
After a thorough exam, our board certified pediatric dentists will make a comprehensive treatment plan unique to your child’s individual needs.

Pulpotomy
A pulpotomy is completed when a cavity involves, or extends to, the nerve of the tooth. Your child may experience pain and sensitivity when the cavity has extended to this area. This procedure involves removing the infected part of the nerve and replacing it with a medicament. A crown is placed over the tooth to keep the remaining tooth structurally stable.
Root Canal Treatment

Orthodontics
Dr. Myers is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Michigan Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the Michigan Dental Association. Dr. Myers is also on staff at Sparrow Hospital. He is a volunteer clinician at Sparrow Hospital’s cleft lip and palate clinic. Dr. Myers is also an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics at the University of Michigan.
Braces
Frenectomies can be an important part of orthodontic treatment when a long or short frenum is causing tooth or jaw displacement. In the case of a short lingual frenum, patients may push out the lower jaw to make eating or speaking easier – causing pain in the jaw or an underbite. In this case, a lingual frenectomy may be recommended to help ensure the success of orthodontic treatment. When treating a patient with a gap between their front teeth, the orthodontist may recommend a maxillary frenectomy after braces to prevent the teeth from spreading apart after treatment.
