Nutritional Counseling
Typically we recommend that you feed his/her normal food. There are certain surgeries however in which a special, or modified diet will be recommended. If your pet has special nutritional or dietary requirements, please let us know at your initial visit. In general, during recovery (especially for orthopedic surgeries), we recommend that you feed ~20% less than you typically would to reduce the chance of excessive weight gain in the post-operative period.
Comprehensive Examination
A physical examination is very useful in localizing the cause of the lameness. By observing your dog move and by palpating the limb(s), the veterinarian is often able to isolate the specific bone or joint responsible for the lameness. Radiographs (x-rays) may show if any bone fragments are present within the joint and whether or not arthritis has developed.

Pain Management
In general, if your pet has had a major surgical procedure, he or she will stay in the hospital a minimum of one night. Overnight hospitalization allows us to carefully monitor your pet for any complications that may occur post surgically and provide an appropriate level of pain management. Different surgical procedures may require longer durations in the hospital. Fortunately, with minimally invasive surgical techniques hospital stays are typically shorter than they ever have been before with traditional procedures.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Painful ear disease can be common in companionanimals. Bacterial and/or yeast infections, foxtails and other foreign bodies, external parasites, allergies and skin conditions are the most common causes of ear disease. Tumors and other systemic disorders can also damage the ear and related structures. In some breeds, notably the cocker spaniel, the ear canal contains an excessive number of oil and sweat glands that can become blocked or infected, predisposing the ear to problems.

Ear Infection Treatment
If your companion has frequent ear infections, surgical procedures can help protect hearing, improve drainage, relieve pain and improve quality of life by removing the infected and diseased tissues.
Urinary Tract Infection Treatment
The urinary tract includes the kidneys, the ureters (conduits between the kidneys and the bladder), the bladder, the urethra, and portions of the penis or vagina. Common surgical diseases of the urinary tract in dogs and cats are urinary calculi (“stones”), feline urethral obstruction, and cancer. Left untreated, these conditions can cause pain, bloody urine, urinary tract infections, “accidents” in the house, and they may become life-threatening.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Arthritis Treatment
Continual instability, in absence of a healthy ligament constraining abnormal movement of the joint, leads to progressive osteoarthritis. This instability can also lead to other cartilage injury within the joint, commonly a tear in the medial meniscus (a structure which separates and cushions the bones within the stifle).
Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Hip dysplasia is a multi-factorial, hereditary disease that, in its most severe clinical presentation, can result in both early (puppyhood) lameness and late term (juvenile or adult) crippling lameness. The causes for hip dysplasia are a combination of genetic and environmental factors including hormonal, nutritional and physiologic. Certain breeds (retrievers, Rottweilers, shepherds and pit bulls/bull breed dogs) are at higher risk for hip dysplasia. It most commonly affects both hips (92% of patients).
Knee Problems Treatment
A luxating patella may cause few to very mild symptoms or, more commonly, significant lameness. Often pets will demonstrate intermittent limping in the rear leg(s). A symptomatic pet may stop suddenly when running and may vocalize in pain; it is also common to observe brief periods in which your companion holds up the affected leg as the patella spontaneously luxates. After the pet shakes the leg or lifts it for a minute or two, the quadriceps muscle relaxes allowing the patella to resume its normal position, the pain or discomfort is relieved, and your friend resumes normal activity.

Kidney Disease Treatment
Calculi in the kidneys and ureters are uncommon, and are more often seen in cats than in dogs. Stones that obstruct the flow of urine from the kidneys into the bladder can lead to kidney failure and infection. If this occurs, removal of the calculi and/or affected kidney is recommended. Microsurgical options should be considered even when calculi are not obstructive but kidney function is impaired. Removing kidney or ureteral calculi may prevent further deterioration of kidney function and, if both kidneys are affected, can prevent life-threatening emergencies.

Small Animal Surgery
Dr. Andrew Grange is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He attended University College London where he received his bachelor's degree in orthopedic science in 2005. He then graduated in 2008 from the Royal Veterinary College in London with a degree in veterinary medicine. Following graduation he completed a rotating internship at VCA Emergency Animal Hospital and Referral Center in San Diego, and a residency in small animal surgery at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, MA.
Spaying and Neutering
As with Hip Dysplasia, early radiographic screening of the elbow joints is recommended. This procedure very often can be done at the time of spaying or neutering (typically 6 months of age). Since the problem is genetic in nature, dogs with Elbow Dysplasia should not be used for breeding.

Laboratory Services
All patients are seen by appointment; please call if you need to reschedule or cancel this appointment. Arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time to register and to complete all appropriate paperwork. Bring any records or case summaries provided by your referring veterinarian along with your pet’s medical history, a list of medications, diagnostic images (such as x-rays), and laboratory results. If possible, make prior arrangements to have these results forwarded to our hospital before your appointment; our staff will assist you in obtaining any necessary information. This data may be important in the diagnosis and treatment of your pet’s condition and helps avoid duplication of services and fees. Unless medically contraindicated, please fast your pet prior to the examination, withholding food (it is okay to provide water) after 10pm the night before the exam. This fast may allow us the flexibility, when indicated, to perform routine blood work and/or to safely sedate or anesthetize your pet for diagnostic or therapeutic treatments.
X-Ray
In cats and dogs, urinary tract cancer (neoplasia) most often affects the bladder and the kidneys. When a mass is identified in the urinary tract and suspected to be cancer, complete staging diagnostics — including chest x-rays, an abdominal ultrasound, a complete blood count, and serum blood chemistry — are performed to evaluate the pet’s overall health and to determine if the cancer has spread (metastasized). In some patients, it may be advisable to have a biopsy of the mass performed before preparing for surgery. Depending on the extent of cancer spread and the part of the urinary tract affected, surgery may be recommended to remove the mass, diagnose the type of cancer, and improve quality of life.
