Our spine surgeons consult with other specialists within our clinic, as well as with experts in pediatrics, oncology, and radiation therapy, to ensure the most favorable outcomes.
Primary Care
Also, be sure to check your plan to see if a referral/authorization is required by your insurance company. Some plans require a Primary Care Physician (PCP) to approve all visits. Some plans require authorization to be submitted electronically by the PCP. Â Â It is the member/patientâ€™s responsibility to confirm the referral/authorization has been obtained. Otherwise, they may not pay for the services. This will result in the patient being responsible for the bill and can delay medical treatment if a test or surgery is required.

Endoscopy
We offer patients the latest techniques and technology, utilizing such advanced diagnostic equipment as fluoroscopy to observe bone movement, and electromyelography to measure the electrical transmissions between muscles and nerves.Â We emphasize the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques such as arthroscopy and endoscopy. These procedures utilize state-of-the-art equipmentâ€”fiber-optic lenses and microscopic camerasâ€”allowing major surgery to be performed through tiny incisions that cause minimal disruption to the healthy tissue below.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Electromyography/Nerve Conduction Velocity is used to test the nerves and muscles in your entire lower extremity. Your doctor will order this test when he suspects that there may be some type of problem with the nerve supply to your foot and leg. Commonly the EMG/NCV test is used to diagnosis one of the following: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Peripheral Neuropathy (leg pain), Neuromuscular disorders, Nerve palsy or Paralysis, and Radiculopathy (back pain/neck pain). The EMG portion of the test is used to record the electrical activity in your muscles. It can diagnose diseases of the nerves and muscles and can detect conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, inflamed muscles and pinched nerves.

Ultrasound
Hurting is never fun and it’s often hard for others to understand, as some pain is not from an obvious injury and the damage may be hard to see. To assist our providers in the diagnosis and treatment of your problem, our facility offers digital radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and electromyography and nerve conduction velocity.
MRI
MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. MRI is used by physicians to look inside the body without using X-rays or radiation. It uses safe magnetic fields, radiowaves, and computers to produce detailed and precise images of specific areas of the body, including the muscles, bones, and joints. MRI provides an accurate diagnosis of many musculoskeletal abnormalities and, in some cases, can reduce the need for biopsies, exploratory surgery, and other diagnostic procedures.

Arthroscopy
When conservative treatments prove inadequate, the surgeons here at SBJS can frequently relieve joint pain with minimally invasive surgical procedures, such as joint realignment, ligament reconstruction, and arthroscopy. During arthroscopy, which means â€œ to look inside the joint,â€ the surgeon inserts a pencil-sized arthroscope into the joint through a tiny incision. Fiber optics within the scope enable the surgeon to clearly see the internal joint structures on a TV monitor and to maneuver special microsurgical instruments to repair or remove damaged tissue.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Joint Replacement
Very severe joint pain and disability may require total joint replacement (TJR), a surgical procedure in which arthritic or damaged surfaces in a joint are removed and replaced with an artificial joint called a prosthesis. The prosthesis consists of metal-alloy or ceramic components that replace diseased bone, and high-density plastic that replaces damaged cartilage.Â

Arthroscopy
When the procedure is completed, the incisions are sutured shut, usually with just a single stitch, and then covered with a sterile dressing. A brace or ACE bandage may be placed around the joint to provide protection and stability. Arthroscopy is generally far less traumatic than â€œopenâ€ surgery. Most patients have the procedure as outpatients and are home within several hours.
Hip Replacement
Joint replacement patients are generally discharged from the hospital when they achieve certain rehabilitative milestones, such as getting in and out of bed unassisted or walking 100 feet. Knee and hip replacement patients can expect to be discharged home within 1-2 days and some will be able to go home the same day of surgery. Physical therapy at an outpatient facility is preferred, but some patients may utilize home health care physical therapy.
Knee Replacement
Joints connect the bones in your body while enabling your skeleton to rotate and swivel. The ends of the bones in a joint are connected by thick bands of tissue called ligaments and are covered with smooth, plastic-like tissue called cartilage that prevents them from rubbing against each other. A delicate membrane called the synovium produces a lubricant to reduce friction and wear in the joint.

The specialists at our Sports Medicine Center function as a teamâ€”a winning team of orthopaedic surgeons, physical therapists, and athletic trainers with an unbeaten record in treating common overuse and trauma-induced injuries. Our â€œmobile officeâ€ can be seen at all of the major athletic events of more than 30 high schools and junior colleges in the area.
Physical Therapy
Hand pain and wrist pain can be caused by overuse, traumatic injuries, or arthritis and other diseases. Some issues can be treated at home with anti-inflammatory medications and hot or cold treatments, with physical therapy or corticosteroid injections, but sometimes surgery is necessary.
Frozen Shoulder
The rotator cuff is a set of four muscles connected to the humerus bone that keep it from dislocating, and rotator cuff injuries are a frequent reason for visiting our Sports Medicine Center. Repetitive, overhead motions can result in inflammation, or tendonitits, and small tears in the rotator cuff, which can usually be treated with medication and physical therapy. In younger, and even older, athletic patients, arthroscopic surgery is recommended to restore full function. Physical therapy after surgery is vital to prevent â€œfrozen shoulderâ€ .
Tennis Elbow
Elbow pain can be the result of a condition that has developed over time, such as osteoarthritis, or of a recent injury, such as a fall. The onset of osteoarthritis, a condition involving the degeneration of joint cartilage, often occurs in people with a history of elbow injuries. The most common cause of pain in the elbow can be related to a recent injury. Elbow injuries commonly occur during sports or recreational activities, work-related responsibilities, and falls. Elbow pain can also be caused by overuse. Overuse injuries of the elbow, such as tendonitis, tennis elbow, or golferâ€™s elbow, lead to inflammation, which can cause considerable pain in the elbow and forearm.

Orthotics and Prosthetic Therapy
When it comes to orthothoses and prostheses, one size definitely does not fit all. Patients referred to our Orthotics & Prosthetics (O&P) Department are thoroughly evaluated by our certified orthotist or prosthetist, who determines the optimal design for the type of device prescribed by the referring physician. In addition to taking all the necessary measurements and/or molds, they consult with the patient about his or her habits, lifestyle, goals, the extent of the disability, and any other factors that might affect the function of the device.

Disorders in foot structure or gait can cause or aggravate foot pain and other problems. Plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, metatarsalgia (soreness in the ball of the foot), Achilles tendonitis, lower back pain, and even osteoarthritis can often be managed with orthotic foot products. We offer a wide range of off-the-shelf products from the most reputable manufacturers, including arch supports, insoles, heel cups and pads, and orthopaedic shoes.
