Although signs and symptoms of diabetes may be subtle, classic symptoms include a significant increase in urination, significant increase in thirst, and, weight loss. One of the first signs may be new bedwetting in a child who was previously dry; or, increased daytime accidents. Often, the first sign is a serious and sometimes life-threatening state called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Due to a lack of insulin, DKA occurs when blood sugars levels are very high and the body produces ketones. Ketones are produced when the body has to break down fat for energy. High levels can cause electrolyte imbalances, vomiting, and confusion that can require medical attention.

Amy Marshall was born in Richmond, Virginia. She is a graduate of Atlantic Christian College, Wilson, North Carolina where she received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She earned a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of South Alabama in 2003. During her studies, Amy worked as a Registered Nurse in the cardiac department at Flowers Hospital. Her advanced training also includes cardiac rehab at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Albany, Georgia; and nursing in the neurology department at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville, North Carolina.

Endocrinologist

Newborn screening for hearing loss, PKU, congenital hypothyroidism, low thyroid hormone, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, galactosemia, and Sickle Cell disease and related red blood cell disorders, biotinidase deficiency, amino acid disorders, fatty acid oxidation disorders, organic acid disorders, and cystic fibrosis are routine in Alabama. Testing starts in the hospital and results are usually available at the two-week checkup. Newborn screening test and abnormal hearing tests are repeated at the two-week checkup.
