I've been on a quest to find a decent Americanized Chinese restaurant near my home in southwest Denver, for several months now, with no luck. I had passed Yummy China by until today, never noticing it, nestled in a non-descript strip mall on Kipling and Stanford. Today I found it, and today I wished I had continued to pass it by. The name itself triggered alarm bells, akin to those felt when one is considering patronizing a dollar-per-scoop joint. However, knowing that some of the best restaurants are hole-in-the-wall locations, I set my warnings aside and entered. I looked around: poor decor, dirty carpet, and only one couple sitting down to eat. More alarm bells went off. To be fair, the location is very small, looking as if they mostly do carryout / delivery business. What I really noticed, however, was the lack of anyone at the register, as I waited to be seated. I waited... And waited... For nearly 10 minutes I waited to be seated. So, I grabbed a to-go menu and began mulling over the fare. I settled on vegetable lo mein and steamed rice. Just then, what appeared to be the owner came out from the kitchen, took my order, and rushed back into the kitchen. My heart sank as I seated myself. My order, however, came to me in under five minutes. I'm not kidding. Now... If you know anything about food, you know that level of speed?what could be categorized as McDonalds-esque?is a bad sign in the sit-down restaurant business (nothing against McDonalds; I'm a shareholder). After eating for 10 minutes or so, an early 20-something employee came out of the kitchen, texting on her cell phone (the owner's daughter, I assume). Cell phone in hand, she handed the couple seated across from me their check and boxes for their leftovers. I suddenly realized why I had been waiting so long to be seated. She returned to the kitchen, made herself something to eat, came back out and sat at the register, eating and texting. My glass of water was getting low, so I motioned for the young lady to assist me. No response. I then called for her to assist me. She glanced up and back down to her phone. No water for me! I ate half of the mediocre food. At this point, the employee spoke, over the counter at me, and asked if I needed a box. I indicated that I did and some more water. She returned with a box and the check, plopped it down in front of me, and returned to texting. I paid up and left. Needless to say, I won't be returning!
