What happens when we lump all the symptoms of an illness together, and focus only on eliminating symptoms? The answer is that we start to turn an acute illness (something that should resolve itself over a few days or a week) into a chronic illness pattern (either something that lasts for months, or that repeats itself over and over again). This confusion happens a lot with very common illnesses, such as ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, folliculitis, sore throats, and acne. Most all of the standard treatments offered are suppressive, meaning that they block the symptoms related to inflammation (this is true for almost any medicine that starts with “anti-“, whether it be fever suppressants (anti-pyretics), anti-histamines, or antibiotics). All of those medicines are useful and have an important place in medical treatment, but they are way over-prescribed.

Adam Blanning MD practices integrative and anthroposophic family medicine, and started his holistic medical practice in 2003. Dr. Blanning lectures and teaches nationally and internationally on topics relating to holistic medicine and the dynamics of human development, with a special interest in supporting children. He has served as president of the Anthroposophic Health Association (AHA), an umbrella organization for therapeutic associations working to bring anthroposophic insights into the realms of medicine, nursing, naturopathy, body therapies, artistic therapies, movement therapies and counselling. Dr. Blanning directs the postgraduate physician training programs for anthroposophic medicine in the U.S. (AnthroposophicMedicine.org). He is the author of “Understanding Deeper Developmental Needs: Holistic Approaches for Challenging Behaviors in Children.” Dr. Blanning taught family medicine at both New York Medical College and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he studied English literature as an undergraduate and was a Boettcher Foundation scholar.

We work with people on a broad range of illnesses and complaints, but cannot offer all medical services. We are not able to provide any obstetrical or hospital care, and usually refer you back to your primary care physician for pap smears, blood work, vaccinations, or any other required testing. You will need to maintain a primary care physician through your insurance company, as Dr. Blanning also travels doing teaching and consultative work and cannot guarantee continuous medical care. Please bring all of your current medications (both prescription and over-thecounter) with you to your visit.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Let’s take concerns about ADHD as an example. For many parents and teachers, it is hard to find the line between normal childhood energy and hyperactivity, and between normal distraction and attention deficit disorder. This is because many of the behaviors that are a normal part of childhood growth and development are included in the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. For some children problems like hyperactivity or difficulty completing a task are truly a marker of an imbalanced nervous system, but in many situations, those same behaviors are expressions of a child’s need to find orientation and connection with the world. Being able to calm and focus your concentration is a skill that needs to be learned–we are not born with it automatically. And it is important to try to determine why a child shows a particular behavior, and find ways to help the child to bring it into better balance. A vital part of working with children is to say: “how can we help the child do this better, and give them the skills so that they focus their attention from the inside, out?” not just prescribe medication to suppress behaviors, from the outside, in.

Mistletoe treatment acts as both an immune supporter and stimulator, has been part of Anthroposophic medicine for more than 100 years. Mistletoe (Viscum album) treatments originated within Anthroposophic medicine. Dr. Blanning has offered mistletoe treatment as part of whole person cancer support since 2003, and treated individuals with both localized and metastatic disease, pre-cancerous conditions and palliative care situations. He primarily uses Helixor, and Abnoba preparations, but also makes use of Iscador and Iscucin preparations for special situations. Dr. Blanning helped coordinate and edit the English language translation of the “Vademecum: Foundations and Applications of Mistletoe Use in Oncology.” This is the authoritative guide to mistletoe use.  Dr. Blanning is not an oncologist, he is a family doctor, but he adds expertise with treatments that can strengthen the immune system, encourage healthy detoxification (especially during chemotherapy), and reduce side effects from other treatments.

Eczema
The second step of allergy is the reaction against what is foreign, and this process is what we usually experience as allergy symptoms. The immune system meets, then tries to break down and eliminate what does not belong in the body. This is in many ways a digestive process, but one is now happening in the wrong place, to compensate for something that came too far in. The eyes, nose, lungs and skin are not very good digestive organs. The challenge is that when we routinely suppress inflammatory processes in the body—with antibiotics, and anti-inflammatories, anti-pyretics (fever reducers)—we may hamper the body’s own ability to meet and transform what it encounters as outside substance. In some ways our immune system needs the practice, to be better able to determine what is inside and what is outside. Then it can function in a balanced way. Being exposed to a wide variety of outside substance is not the main problem, as a study actually showed that children living on a farm had significantly reduced risks of hay fever, eczema and asthma. ( Allergy. 2006 Apr;61(4):414-21. Allergic diseases and atopic sensitization in children related to farming and anthroposophic lifestyle—the PARSIFAL study.) There are also studies showing that restricted use of anti-biotics and anti-pyretics is related to a lower overall risk of allergy, and that routine dosing of Tylenol at an early age are associated with an almost two-fold risk of asthma symptoms by age nine. Supporting the digestive capacities of the body is a second important step in anthroposophic treatment of allergy, which may include bitters like absinthium, raw food cleanses, formic acid, or birch leaf tea. A holistic approach seeks to strengthen both aspects of allergy, so that we don’t get pushed too far in, and then have to compensate by pushing too far out.
