Very Good Indian Food

I second what Alps had to say... Ajanta has good Indian food, albiet pretty similar to Amar and Jeet India. They have good variety on the menu and the food is generally consistant and fresh. I have heard that the restaurant changed hands at some point, but have not noticed any change in the quality of food.

One of Dayton's best Indian joints!

I have read some of the reviews here and all I can say is you one star people are curmudgeons who need to get out more. This place is a GREAT family Indian restaurant. Culture is pretty authentic and the food is excellent. Dont come here if you want Americana Bistro styled Indian faux cuisine with a smily face attitude, just stick to applebees or something if you want that kind of service. If you want GREAT curry and all types of authentic Indian cuisine, then go do Ajanta, great stuff!

Decent not great

For the value-minded, go for the buffet. However, you will sacrifice freshness and flavor.
Order off the menu for the tastiest foods.
I did have to go on a scavenger hunt for anything of substance in the dishes. What you mostly get is a bowl full of sauce with maybe a chunk or two of chicken. Ditto on vegetables like cauliflower. Made me feel cheated.
The Tandoori dishes seemed like the best value.
Give it a try, but make sure to hold them accountable for giving you your money's worth.

Racism for dinner

If your in the mood for racism served on a platter, then Ajanta India is your place. I'm in a interracial relationship with someone from India and I've eaten at other Indian establishment prior, including Ajanta. However, this one male waiter in particular decided to let us know how he felt about interracial couples and slammed our plates and silverware against the table as he waited for us. Obviously he had a problem, because he continued to walk back and forth past our table glaring at us, like some thug. I told the owner, ( who was a sweet elderly Indian woman ) and she told us that she's had problems with the waiter in the past and agreed that we were treated that way because he's a bigot, however, she would not discount our bill or reprimand him in anyway whatsoever. WoW!

A once-great restaurant, now only average

This used to be a great Indian restaurant - until it changed management/ownership about 2 years ago. Now the food is well below the exquisite standards Ajanta had maintained for many years prior. The food is lacking in flavor and subtlety, somehow the tastes are empty and the textures are greasy. Do yourself a favor and go to Jeet or Amar. A pity.

Great food/horrible service

If you're looking for good food, you've found your place. But unfortunately you can find a place with good food that is ruined by the service or even the attitude of those providing your food. This is what I encountered at Ajanta: a dull environment (depressing colors), unfriendly service (depressing people), but great food! At times I was a little afraid to ask for things cause I was afraid I would be annoying my male waiter (I had two waiters). I usually do not drink out of restaurant glasses because most places do not do a great job of disinfecting the glasses, so I like to ask for a straw. My waiter seemed to be frustrated with my request and so threw the straw on my plate. He even ignored my mom when she asked what type of rice he was putting down on the table. I had to give him a second request in a demanding tone in order for him to reply.

However, the food was fantastic. For starters, me and my mother shared the mixed platter with samples of several appetizers on the menu. For the main entree, I had chicken Sigaan and my mother ordered Lamb korma. Both dishes were tasty, but I think the korma was tastier. Our bread addition was the garlic nan, which was great as well. The portions are nice sized and the food is reasonably priced. Coming from New York City I know good Indian, but my only issue is the cold service. All in all if you don't need service with a smile and a pleasant attitude to enjoy your food, this is a great place.

Workers sleep on the floor and in the booths!!!

So one day in the middle of the day a friend and I came by to eat at Ajanta (because honestly the food is pretty good). The ""open"" neon sign was illuminated and the door was unlocked. So we I went in and walked in the door to the dining area. It was dark so I said ""hello""? Then I realized that all of the workers and many family members (there were tons of people!) were sleeping all sprawled out in the booths, on the floor, etc! One of the men jumped up, rushed towards me, and shouted ""Closed! Closed!"" Shocked, we stood there as he basically pushed us out of the door. Weird stuff...

Great Indian Food Buffet!

We're new to the area and have tried several Indian restaurants all around, but Lo and Behold, the best one is just literally around the corner from us! They have a buffet on Monday and Tuesday nights and on Sundays as well. Their service is very personal especially when they get to know you, and their garlic nan bread and dal soup are very good. Check out the Tikka Masala-just hot enough but not too hot to let the curry taste be overwhelmed.

worst place to go

Tasteless Food. Nothing but just WHIP cream all over. Customer Service is worst, when you go in no one is there to care about you. And the food is hopeless. I will never go again.
