Labor and Delivery
This swab of your vaginal area is performed at your 36 week appointment. Group B strep (GBS) is a normal bacteria that is naturally found in the vagina and is not harmful to women or a developing fetus. However, it can be harmful to your infant if exposed at the time of delivery. If you test positive for this bacteria, you will receive antibiotics during labor and delivery.

Tubal ligation may also decrease your risk of ovarian cancer, especially if the entire fallopian tubes are removed.
Cervical Cancer
HPV is a virus; there are high risk and low risk types of HPV. High risk HPV is sexually transmitted. It infects the cervix and causes abnormal pap smears. It can eventually cause cervical cancer. Low risk HPV types cause genital warts. Your immune system can sometimes clear the HPV virus if you are healthy, avoid smoking, and eat a healthy diet. You should tell your partner if you have HPV.

Radiology
When you get services from an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center, certain providers there may be out-of-network. In these cases, the most those providers can bill you is your plan’s in-network cost-sharing amount. This applies to emergency medicine, anesthesia, pathology, radiology, laboratory, neonatology, assistant surgeon, hospitalist, or intensivist services. These providers can’t balance bill you and may not ask you to give up your protections not to be balance billed.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
There are risks with any procedure, including risk of bleeding, infection, pain, and damage to surrounding organs (like the vagina, cervix, and bladder). There is always a possibility that you may need other procedures in the future if the ablation does not fix your heavy bleeding. However, ablation surgery is a minimally invasive surgery with subsequently reduced risks. 90% of patients who have undergone ablation surgery express satisfaction.

Vasectomy
A vasectomy is male sterilization and is an in-office minor procedure performed by a urologist. The procedure blocks the vas deferens, which over time, will remove sperm from the seminal fluid. This procedure requires a follow-up visit to confirm there are no more sperm present in the fluid.
Robotic Surgery
Laparoscopic oophorectomy may also be robotically assisted in certain cases. During robotic surgery, the surgeon watches a 3-D monitor and uses hand controls that allow finer movement of the surgical tools.
Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. It ends menstruation and the ability to become pregnant. Depending on the reason for the surgery, a hysterectomy may also involve the removal of other organs and tissues such as the ovaries and/or fallopian tubes.
Endometrial Ablation
For our purposes here, we will discuss Endometrial Ablation and its definition, details and an overview of the surgery experience and benefits. An endometrial ablation is a quick in-office procedure that is used to treat heavy bleeding in women who have not gone through menopause. It is a good option for women with heavy periods to normalize (or, in some cases, even stop) the blood flow. There are no hormones involved with the procedure. Overall, about 95% of women are satisfied with the results of the procedure. If you are still interested in having children, an endometrial ablation is not a good option for you. Pregnancies can be very high risk after an endometrial ablation. You should use some sort of birth control if you have this procedure.
Laparoscopy
Dr. Myears was raised in Springfield, Missouri. She graduated from the University of Missouri summa cum laude and then moved to Dallas to attend UT Southwestern for medical school. She stayed in Dallas for residency at Parkland Hospital, one of the highest volume obstetric hospitals in the nation. She served as chief resident and won several teaching awards from the medical students and residents. Dr. Myears loves making personal connections with her patients and looks forward to taking care of women throughout all stages of life, from contraceptive counseling to pregnancy to the menopausal transition. She has a special interest in adolescent contraceptive management, both high and low risk pregnancies, and management of abnormal bleeding. She performs in office procedures such as hysteroscopy and LEEP, as well as advanced laparoscopy and robotic procedures. In her free time, she enjoys running, traveling, skiing, cooking, and spending time with her wonderful husband.
