During a 6-mo checkup at a different clinic I was told that I needed a couple of cavities filled, and that their clinic would only do composite fillings and not amalgam fillings. Before I got the work done, I consulted with two different dentists I know back in NY. They both told me to save some money and find another dentist who would do amalgams.\r \r When I called Jefferson Dental Clinic and explained my situation, their staff person on the phone told me that I could have amalgams done there, so I made an appointment to get the fillings. When I showed up for my appointment, first I waited for over an hour in the waiting room. When I was finally seen, nobody seemed to be aware of the fact that I had received an exam, prophylactic cleaning, and X-rays less than a week beforehand at the other clinic.\r \r They insisted on doing the X-rays anyway, and after the first staff member kept messing up the bite wings someone else had to finish. Somewhere around 25 shots were taken of my head, and this is after I had already had X-rays done just a few days beforehand. They then tried to sell me on getting prophylactic cleaning done again! I felt like the staff was more motivated to sell services instead of providing dental care.\r \r When it was time to get the fillings, I was informed that they only do composites. I told them that the person on the phone told me I could get amalgams here and the response was basically a blank stare. Not only was an apology never given during my entire visit, but the doctor was very condescending. I have the feeling that his insistence on only performing composite fillings was motivated by profit rather than his claim that they are unsafe and outdated--especially since the ADA has made statements reaffirming the safety and effectiveness of amalgam fillings.
