This is a true "blow by blow" review! Long but worth your time reading!!! As a suit & tie wearing professional that waited until age 47 to find something meaningful enough to use as the subject matter for my first tattoo I wanted the entire experience to be GREAT! I wanted to feel comfortable, relaxed & at "home" during the experience not tense and out of place like I felt at the other shops I visited. I asked clients & friends with ink who they suggested. I visited those shops & they were just as I expected, loud music & the typical uninterested tattoo artists. I was not expecting the rude brush off I got at those shops I went to because I was not looking to do some crazy expensive sleeve or giant back piece. Never blow off anyone. You never know when that $200 tattoo can turn into a $1,000 back piece! Then I did what I should have done in the first place....research! With in a few minutes of going on the internet and reading reviews on many different websites the names Shavon & Purple Lotus kept coming up with five star & very complementary reviews. At this point I spoke with my wife, who is getting a very detailed back piece, about Shavon & she immediately said "Oh, that's exactly who I am going to have do my tattoo, she has so many people that love her & her work. I have been researching for months". I called The Purple Lotus, set up a consultation & went down to her studio. I walked in & immediately knew this was the environment I had been looking for! The entire first room is filled to the brim with Japanese art, carvings and artwork. After meeting with Shavon for a few minutes I knew she was the artist for me! Shavon is as genuine a person as you will find. No pretense, no BS, no attitude......and mostly a friend. After my consultation & setting an appointment for the next day (She was booked until November) She said "give me some love" & came around the table and gave me a genuine hug. My personal opinion is Shavon is a TRUE artist and books by feeling not by dollars. The next day I came in early for my appointment & Shavon was doing VERY intricate wrist tattoos for a client and i was told it would be a long while. During the time that I was hanging out, I met a very cool "cast" of friends that help her out at her studio. They were all very friendly & inviting! Again making her studio feel much more like "home" than a tattoo studio. From time to time Shavon would call out to me, or come out & tell me to come in & see the work she was doing. As it came to be my time for a tattoo she was very gentle, she was very calming, looked me square in the eye during every conversation (trust), answered every question I had (even the dumb, first timer questions) and was just very soothing. She told me EXACTLY what to expect before she started from the sound of the tattoo machine to the different needle sizes and the pain they cause. Because it was my first tattoo she went VERY easy at the beginning to give minimal pain and time for my endorphins to kick in. During the hour and half or so that I was on Shavons table a steady stream of her previous and prospective clients and friends came in and out of the room and Shavon spoke to them all during the whole tattoo process. When she was done with my tattoo and temp bandage she turned around and said to me "your part of the family now". And of course, as I was about to leave she said "where is my love", walked over and gave me another genuine hug. I have to say the experience at Purple Lotus with Shavon and her family FAR EXCEEDED my expectations of the entire process!!! I WILL be back for more ink and with my wife for her back piece just to hang out with the Purple Lotus family!
I'm a 43 year old conservative Mom who has wanted a tattoo since I was about 15. My daughter wanted a tattoo last year for Christmas, but I freaked out just a bit...but started to do some research anyway (it's for my kid, right?). After months and months of searching the internet, praying about it, and doing much due diligence, I kept coming back to the artwork of the Purple Lotus... Reading the reviews where people said Shavon got inside their heads to put the tattoo concept in their minds into a beautiful piece of artwork made me curious, but IT IS THE TRUTH, PEOPLE! My daughter designed a tattoo for me of a cross with a sunburst in the middle - drew it on a sticky note, and then we went to the Purple Lotus Studio and talked to Shavon about it. My daughter wanted a cross with angel wings...no sketch, but we brought a couple pictures from the internet of concepts she liked or didn't like. It was exciting to see the creative wheels start turning in Shavon's head. After talking to my daughter, Shavon pulled out an architectural design book that had wrought iron scrollwork designs and began flipping through it, stopping at exactly the type pattern that personified my daughter - strong, not too girly-girl, but feminine and beautiful...(ok, I'm the mom writing this, and I reserve the right to be biased...point is, Shavon was able to perceive that after talking to us for 25 minutes...). We talked about ankle tattoos and price ranges, and made an appointment for our first tattoos on my daughter's 18th birthday. I honestly am not amazed by too much in life, but when we got the sketches Shavon drew of our tattoos, I was blown away. Not only did she create a beautiful cross with angel wings for my girl, she drew up the ankle tattoos that FAR exceeded my expectations... The process of actually getting the artwork inscribed on our bodies wasn't scary at all. The fact that the studio is professional, clean, neat, (and the fact that Shavon led the charge and got legislation passed to regulate the industry in SC) immediately put me at ease. Was I nervous? Heck yeah! But Shavon is absolutely truthful, told us what to expect, and turned a sketch on a sticky note into a beautiful sunshiny masterpiece of art on my shoulder. Her artistic talent is a gift! She is a consummate perfectionist, and knows in her mind's eye what will not only look beautiful, but be a reflection of the person... My daughter's tattoo took much longer than mine and has an incredible amount of intricate detail, but even after the first session where only the linework was done, I thought it was beautiful! Shavon kept saying, "Oh this is nothing - wait till it's finished!" Now that it's almost done, I understand - the detail and shading brought the artwork to life! Every color is absolutely perfect! Watching Shavon at work is almost as cool as looking at the finished product...like watching Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel...a masterpiece comes to life right before your eyes! (and I promise I'm not getting paid to write this - it's really how I feel!) Shavon made our first tattoo experience a wonderful one...her rapport with her customers, her professionalism, the simple and detailed instructions she gives for after care and what to expect, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the studio, and above all, the amazing gift that is Shavon's intrinsic artistic talent...I'm calling to schedule my ankle tat right now!
I received my second Tattoo from Shavon's Purple Lotus Body Art and it is fantastic! My first tattoo was with Shavon and I am still thrilled everytime I look at it. My second tattoo was with Alex and again I am thrilled everytime I look at it. Both Shavon and Alex are terrific, talented artists. They work with you to develop a custom design that matches your tattoo concept. They are skilled tattoo artists with different artistic styles. Purple Lotus can meet any tattoo design you have in mind. You can feel secure that your body is in good hands with either artist. Purple Lotus is a stellar facility - clean, friendly & like being at a good friend's home. Both artists have gone beyond my expectations. I already have my third tattoo planned and am looking forward to it. Columbia is fortunate to have such talent! Shavon & Alex: Thanks for a great experience and great tattoos! C-ya soon - Mike My first tattoo review: The atmosphere at Purple Lotus is like you are visiting a close friend's home. I felt comfortable and welcomed the first time I visited Purple Lotus and met Shavon and Richard. I gave Shavon my idea for the tattoo I wanted. A few days later she had the design drawn up and it exceeded my expectations. Shavon is very accommodating when scheduling the time to have the tattoo done. She will work with you to fit you in with your busy schedule and hers. My first sitting was to have my tattoo's outline done. Shavon is a talented artist with a quick, light touch. I couldn't believe how beautiful and detailed her work is. I was extremely pleased with the result and that was just the outline. I couldn't wait to have the color added. After Shavon added the color my body art was unbelievably awesome. This is not flash, this is original art by an artist. Shavon has designed my next body art piece and she is working on my third. I look forward to having her work on me again with my next piece. The completed art goes way beyond the paper design. If you are looking for original art to wear on your body then Purple Lotus is the place to go. If you are wanting a tattoo and you are not quite sure about it and you are a little anxious about going to a "tattoo parlor" then try Purple Lotus. If you are looking for a talented artist who you can trust tattooing that body of yours then say hello to Shavon. I got my one and only tattoo about 25 years ago. It was a "Tattoo Parlor" that offered flash. I had a tattoo done and thought it was cool. After that I wanted something more. I wanted art work, something original, something unique, something with personal meaning for me. I visited many tattoo parlors over the years and didn't find what I was looking for until I walked into Purple Lotus and met Shavon. Again, I highly recommend Purple Lotus and Shavon for anyone and everyone, whether you are a first time "tattooee", someone who wants their old flash tattoos covered or refurbished with art or if you are a seasoned "tattooee" looking for an additional work of art. Thanks Shavon and I'm looking forward to my next session with you. - Mike
