Velvet Tango Room

London, Venice, Paris. This is where you would have to go to find anything like the Tango Room. The first time you walk in you feel transported back in time. A time where gentelman did not need to be reminded to remove their hats upon entering a room. Where tuxedos and long black gloves don't look the least bit out of place. And where you can order a Rob Roy, Sidecar, Ramos Gin Fiz, or Lady in Red and not have the bartender stare at you with a blank look and ask you if there is any RedBull in that. Every drink is made from scratch. If you order a sour you get egg white, fresh squeezed juice and it is shaken until it is blended to perfection. Would you wait 5 minutes for a drink anywhere else? At the Tango Room the art of blending a drink perfectly is a show in itself. The first time you visit sit at the bar and just watch the bartenders work. It is as fascinating as wathching an artist create a painting out of a blank canvas. The lights stay low, the conversation is private and softly spoken, and on those magical nights when Paulius is present every lady receives a rose. You have never had a Manhattan like a Tango Manhatten (If you have ever even had a Mannhattan). There is live jazz everynight performed exquisitley by some of the areas best piano and bass musicians who transport you back to the days of Cab Calloway and Benny Goodman. Call ahead and reserve the back room and experience a place that I cannot describe in words. From the beautiful bartenders, the eclectic decor, the clientelle of mature, sophisticated ladies and gentleman, and cocktails like you have never even dreamed of you will be hard pressed to ever go anywhere else for a drink. The fact that it is hard to find only helps to preserve the mystique. Take the time to find it and you will certainly never be dissapointed.

I wanted to write a review of a place I miss dearly. I moved from Cleveland and this is one of the places I wanted to take with me.
The Velvet Tango Room is a place like no other. Yes, it is hard to find... but worth searching for. The drinks are first class and top shelf all the way. There are some who may say it is pricey, but you get what you pay for.
What do you pay for here.... You walk in to a place where you are greeted with a smiling staff, who is ready and quite willing to create you something wonderful. Here drinks are created not made.... if you drink has a fruit flavor, you will be able to watch them squeeze fresh fruit juice before you. If you do not know what you want, tell them what you like and they will create you something like you have never tasted but love and adore. A piano player and a stand up bass playing in the background just further set the mood for you.
This place is truly one like no other and worth the trip.

I was taken by my lovely girlfriend as my 21st birthday celebration. From the reviews and website, I couldn't wait to go here. The VTR has the best bartenders around (and most knowledgeable), fantastic cocktails, and my favorite - a great single malt scotch list. Try the Ramos Gin Fizz or the Tango Manhattan. Sure the drinks are on the pricier side, but there's great unobtrusive music, Paulius and a fantastic staff all make you feel special. There is a happy hour where some of the cocktails are a few bucks off. I've been back numerous times and will keep coming back as much as possible. Oh, and try and reserve the back room if you're planning on going; it's definitely worth it.

A gentelman I worked for, along with his friend, took a group of us out on the town one night. He told me as soon as I walked through the doors, I would fall in love with the place. He had also said that it is a great place to go on a first date. I happened to have a date later that week and we scoped the place out. Needless to say my date and I went to the Velvet Tango room. It was one of the greatest date experiences I had. The Velvet Tango room offers wonderfull cocktails, romance and music. Seating is very cozy and the lights are dim. I was greeted with a long stem rose as soon as I had walked through the door, along with them taking our coa7ts for us, which was a nice touch. Caviar was served that night, although I did not try it.
It has been quite some time since I have visited The Velvet Tango room, but if I had the opportunity, I would visit there every opportunity I had. It has an adult like atmosphere where there is no need to worry about being run over by mass amounts of people.
This is not your average bar. It is very upscale. I love it!

Don't miss it. Located in Duck Island, it's easy to pass by the Velvet Tango. There is no sign; only cars parked along the street. The owner, Paulius, enforces a strict dress code and presents all ladies with a long-stemmed rose. Everything about the Tango is first rate. Top shelf liquor, wine and cognac...and heavenly chocolate drinks (try the Cocoa Couture). Even the television, which is tuned to black and white at all times. If you are priviledged, you might get into the Back Room. And remember, never play anything from Cats on the grand piano.

It seems as if the owner of the Velvet Tango Room never ceases to outdo himself. A new and absolutely solid barstaff once again makes up the foundation of the VTR and thus starts a new chapter in the bar's lauded history. After trying a few different people in the rotation, it appears that magical combination of professionalism and beauty has been found once again with the ladies behind the bar. Whether pleasing your eyes, or their spot-on drinks pleasing your palate...At the Velvet Tango Room, life is good...
UPDATE: The bar is now NON-SMOKING inside. Also, the now (in)famous back room is available by reservation. You've been hearing the whispers & rumours for years, now see it for yourself!

How can anyone NOT want to go to this place? What some clueless folks call a ""dangerous"" area is a quiet neighborhood -- just because there's not a CVS across the street doesn't mean it's ""scary."" It's WONDERFUL to find a place where anyone who's a grown-up can enter. Leave your purple hooter shots at home and drop your attitude at the door; you either feel at home here or you don't. Champagne cocktails rock, too.
