Reply to ""Former Employee""

Brendan Ring, here. Owner of Nighttown. I want to reassure all of our customers that what this ""former employee"" wrote cannot be possibly true.

We have been in business since 1964. We constantly win awards from The Plain Dealer, Cleveland Magazine, Scene Magazine. Literally thousands of people come through our doors each and every day to dine and be entertained. Arguably, we are among the top ten restaurant/clubs in town just on visibility alone.

With that kind of visibility and reputation to maintain, we would be utter fools to take food safety in any way other than very, very seriously.

We get surprise inspections by the Health Department and our inspection report is available for anyone to see.

We know, perhaps better than most home chefs, how dangerous it is to mix meat, poultry and vegetables. To that end, color-coded cutting boards are just one way we ensure food safety.

You have to just love the internet, where anyone can say anything and remain anonymous. I started this post with my real name. When you come into Nighttown, you can ask for me by name. And if you do, I'd be happy to give you a tour of our kitchen.

Former Employee Scared by Sanitation

I worked there a few years ago and was going to write this when I quit but waited so more people would leave and I could stay anon.

While I worked there though I saw numerous times when health codes were violated. I have seen things get dropped on the floor and then served, I have seen raw meat prepped on the same board that later had ready to eat veg worked on, without cleaning first. By the time I left I was too grossed out to eat anything there that I hadn't prepared myself from the start.

Not a good night.

We drove over from Avon Lake to meet our friends from Aurora. We paid the $30 cover charge to sit in the room where the entertainment was featured. We liked that.
Then we ordered. Two of us got the $21 strip steak, my wife got scampi and my friend got an Italian dish. Honestly every thing not very good. The strip steaks were tough. The cesar salads for an extra $5.00 were tasteless. Three of us had Bloody Mary's and we all agreed they were sub quality. Sort of watery with little spices and no salt. We were having such a good time talking none of us spoke up about how bad the meals were until we were almost done. Too Late!
The bill came to $189.!! including the tip plus the $30 we paid at the door. We are able to spend $200 for dinner but we still do not like wasting money of a bumb ""Night Out!""
No More Night Town for Us.

Was served raw chicken

I booked an evening there for 8 friends to celebrate a birthday. I love their outdoor dining; it created a great environment for the evening. The service was very slow, but they were busy (it was about 8pm). The server took at least a 1/2 hour to take our order. Dinner took 1 1/2 hours for to be served.

My friend ordered the Chevre Chicken. After her first bite she thought it tasted odd and opened it up to look at the chicken. It was totally raw on the inside (looked cooked on the outside). The server saw it and immediately took it away and took her order for a burger instead. I was very surprised a manager or owner did not come to personally apologize.

As far as the other food, it was good. There was a wide variety to pick from. I personally would not recommend dining there, but if you do, don't order the chicken.

Worst dining in Cleveland

It is always better to wait a couple of days before offering one's overall experience -so I would like to reflect my visit to Nighttown on Sunday, June 3rd 2007. We had made reservations for dinner and concert (Jean Luc Ponty) and invited a client. When we arrived there were masses of people cruched by the entry-bar and non one person gave impression they knew what was going on or how to get seated. The lady in charge of assigning the numbers so that you could get called and taken into the dining room kept saying I don't know, and acted that way -she was completely out of her depth. People were getting seated and people came in front of us and it was not a pretty sight. When I approached the owner (Brendan Ring) and attempted to ask him whether he should give some help to the gal who was struggling - he yelled at me without any reason. I was humiliated. He was obviously not concerned about anyone other than his full house! So we got the number after 30 minutes and 45 minutes after arriving got a table. On to food. Could not get the Pommeroy champagne that was on the menu. Got a cheap substitute. My drink was seriously watered down. The waiter dropped a fork off her plate as she walked by and it almost fell into my lap. The waiter who brought my entree dropped the entire Haloumi kebab off my plate onto the back of a woman's dress seated next to me and actually attempted to justify his clumsiness and only after I alerted him to the fact Haloumi kebab fell onto the woman's dress offerred her to pay for dry cleaning. The food was average at best since the second kebab that was brought to the table was twice as large as the original one left on the plate - so do you only get nice portions if you are not happy? In all this was the most ridiculous, unsatisfying humiliating experience we had dining in 20 years. I have dined at Nighttown previously and the food is not inspiring. The owner made it perfecty clear what was important to him. It is not the customer!

From the Owner of Nighttown...

Dear Restaurant-goer,

Brendan Ring, here. I am the owner of Nighttown. I want to thank all of the other reviewers on CitySearch for their kind comments about my restaurant.

I write only to correct three errors on the description of Nighttown: 1. We ARE considered by many to be quite romantic. Our 4 dining rooms are filled with art work on the walls, the light is dim, the outdoor dining (with a full-wall waterfall) is sublime and many wedding proposals, engagements and celebrations have occured at Nighttown; 2. Regarding our kid-friendliness, we do not cater to young children but neither do we discourage them from accompanying their parents. While we do not have a ""kids menu"" nor high-chairs, we often have children at Nighttown whose parents feel comfortable taking them to a more-sophisticated, white table establishment.

Finally, please know that we are definitely handicap-accessible. All four of our rooms plus our restrooms are easily navigable.

Nighttown was opened in 1965. We are primarily a restaurant, but we are also the only place in Ohio on Down Beat's List of The 100 Best Jazz Clubs in the World. We hope you'll give us a try.

Great place for weekend brunch, especially if eaten on the outdoor deck. Be prepared for hearty, heavy food worthy of lazy weekend nap afterwards!

Splendid Evening Out

My wife and I entertained friends from LA at Nighttown recently. The food was delicious and our server was prompt, friendly and helpful. Afterwards, we stayed for that night's live entertainment, a jazz band from Paris called Sakesho with Andy Narell, a steel drum master from New York City. The band was tight and the energy was fabulous. They had the joint hopping almost immediately. The atmosphere in the jazz club is wonderful, unpretentious and hip. The best evening spent in years. We're going back!

I am from out of town and was taken by a friend who has since then moved out of state with me. Night Town is a quite remarkable place with exceptional food and music. I highly recomend the French Onion Soup followed by the Dublin Lawyer. Night Town just isn't a place you can find anywhere. The art and antiques that decorate are one of a kind finds. When I am in Cleveland Heights from now on I will be visiting Night Town.

The patio is wonderful!

I'd been to Nighttown before for drinks and great music. It's a terrific night club. The ambience is dark wood - very clubby with very nice dining areas. But it's a great restaurant as well. On Mother's Day, we sat on the patio & it was wonderful! It's under a vine-laden trellis and surrounded by lattice walls. through which you can enjoy the beautiful park-like greenery that borders the place. The menu is diverse with fish, beef, seafood and pasta.
