This place sports two separate "entities," one is Lenhardt's: a German/Hungarian restaurant that rests above Christy's: an old world bar. First, we had food in Lenhardt's. The staff is a bit slow, but this is true in most of the mom & pop restaurants I have visited (multiple locations I have tried in Chicago, Dayton, Columbus, Cleveland). While this can be a bit annoying to some remember that all the food prepared here is handmade and in house with fresh ingredients. Also since this is a mom and pop place their budget is split between staff and exceptionally good food. They've chosen to have a short handed staff rather than skimp on their ingredients. Remember this is an Authentic German Restaurant, and that means you have to enter this place with a palate ready to experience flavors you may not be accustomed to. I recommend trying the Italian (parmesan cheese and garlic) schnitzle served on weekend evenings. The garlic very fresh and is a little much if you aren't used to it, so I'd recommend asking for it to be put on the side. For a side spaetzle is a good "starting ground" I add butter to it and it tastes amazing. For dessert the almond cake with vanilla creme icing and strawberries is a favorite and I would say that while all the desserts are great, this is my personal favorite (and I'm not even a fan of strawberries). We also talked to the owner, who is natively German and very friendly, if perhaps slightly hindered by a language barrier. As to complaints against the speed of the staff. There are very few waiters and waitresses, a cutback to ensure the food keeps it's freshness and taste. So expect a wait for things, but the staff is very friendly and the waitress we had was very bubbly, but had too much work to be up to chain restaurant efficient.
Christy's is underneath Lenhardt's, and the design is very german and very old world. You can see the age of this building (made in the 1800s) in it's design, and personally I find the aesthetic to be inviting.
The food was excellent, the Saturday evening service a little less so altho certainly adequate. The portion size was exactly what one person ought to have, which meant that it was hard to share and there wasn't anything to take home. Actually, that may not be a bad thing! We will definitely be going back.

Good food, but owner is rude and awkward. Place is VERY dirty also. From floor to ceiling, dirt and grime. I don't care how old a place is, it was gross. Tables are ALWAYS sticky, and plates are food stained. Their basement bar smells like dead animals. My wife and i went down there to have a drink and could not even stay to finish it. I have also heard from many people that this is the last place you would want to go for a UC football game, food takes forever and the T.V's are so small you need binoculars to see them.

Despite only about 6 people dining the rude staff finaly seated us in about 20 minutes. The first appearance suggested that the dining area hadn't been cleaned in about 4 days (I hate to see what the kitchen looks like). My silverware needed to be replaced as the dishwasher neglected the large hunks of food on my fork but they still managed to make it to my table. The food finaly arrived and I think it may have been cooked the previous day, at least the temperature suggested so. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!! TRUST ME GO SOME PLACE ELSE!!

perhaps you have a bit of aryan envy? you're vibes about the ""aryans"" are the same as what you're saying they had about your ""black"" friends. don't hate, appreciate the differences in how people look and act, and respect other peoples opinions even if they don't work out the way you want them to. don't be quick to displace yours or the popular feelings on people there trying to make a living!

Lenhardt's/Christy's has the best potato pancakes that I have ever tasted! We had a friends get together there the day after Thanksgiving at the bar called Christy's (entrance is on the left side, in the basement). The atmosphere is extremely comfortable with booths, pool table, juke box, a couple of video games and large tvs to watch, especially UC Football games! The food was delicious and the service excellent. Its a great hangout for all age groups. That says a lot as we had many adults and our small army of kids 8 years of age and under. The staff was extremely accomodating--we will definitely go there again over the Christmas holidays!

I tried it once before last semester, and despite the food and service being absolutely horrible, I was out to have a good time tonight, not eat...so I decided I'd try it again...What a mistake that was.
The short haired blond bouncer at the front must have some Aryan in him because he was nothing but condescending and suspicions of my black friends, and refused to let one of them in, DESPITE HER I.D. Being her REAL I.D..... The managers didn't do much to fix the situation, even when we asked nicely to return her REAL I.D. they were jerks and rude about it. As if they were better than any of my non-white friends...
This place just exudes bad vibes in volumes...Even if they decide you're good or white enough to get in (I was apparently) once inside its a testosterone fueled competition for who can find the easiest girls. There's no intellect, there's no good clean/dirty FUN, its a competition between meatheads to take the drunkest girl (of which there will be 4) home...
Just steer clear of Lenhardt's...I will NEVER go back.
It may have been good in the past, but those days are long gone.

This place was attrocious! I had heard all kinds of things about this place, more about the area actually, but some had said i needed to stop by here and others stay away! i wish i had stayed away! This site forbids any specifics, however,in a politically correct way my food was TOTALLY unnacceptable by any health standards...and it was addressed in such a flippant way that i was basically expected to act as everything was fine and be ""hush hush"" about it! i have since made sure to tell every friend and family member i have to stay away from there for their own good!

This was a lovely place to hang out at with intelligent students and graduates of UC. In recent years, I've seen fights, attempted stabbings, shootings outside the establishment and the beergarten and lower section have become meat markets on steriods. I don't think the staff or Christy is taking full care of their patrons and it is only a matter of time until something drastic happens at this establishment. It is a bacchanalian pit of despair now. The guys look for fights, the women are pretentious and they only have one pool table and it smells downstairs. Odors, bad attitudes and danger don't make a good restaurant/bar. Sorry.

One of the few and certainly the best german restaurant in town. Its strangwe that a town so well known for its German Heritage would have so few authentic German Restaurants. Lenhardt's is one of the last surviving icons of an age gone by.
There was a time when none of the waitstaff spoke English as a first language (If they even spoke it at all). The younger generation has taken over and opened a presence for the younger crowd around back called the Ratskeller, but the food here...The Schnitzels that they are known for are second to none.
If you find yourself in Cincinnati with a hankering for German food, go and check them out. They are very convenient to downtown.
Two Thumbs Up!!
