Comprehensive Examination
Special Anesthetic Requirements – Geriatric patients are monitored very closely under anesthesia. Anesthetic protocols are altered in geriatric animals based on recent physical examinations and diagnostics including bloodwork. Geriatric animals respond differently to anesthesia than younger patients, and may have lower tolerances to certain medications. Also, geriatric patients often take longer to recover from anesthesia than younger animals as well.

Behavioral Disorder Treatment
P = Panleukopenia, also known as feline distemper. Feline distemper is a highly contagious disease that moves very quickly through the system. It is caused by a parvovirus similar to the parvovirus seen in dogs. As many as 90% of young kittens (under six months old) with panleukopenia do not survive the virus. The disease is most severe in young kittens but can affect cats of all ages. Panleukopenia may remain active in the environment for up to a year without a host. The FVRCP vaccine is very effective in preventing rhinotracheitis, calcivirus, and panleukopenia.

In humans, this technique is often used for the treatment of patients with intractable cancer, to reduce pain and discomfort by temporarily numbing sensory nerves. It is also used in humans to treat liver and prostate cancer, cervical cancer, and hemorrhoids along with a variety of skin conditions and tumors.
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
FVR = Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis. This is a severe upper respiratory infection that is most dangerous to young kittens and older cats. The virus is extremely contagious to cats, and is caused by a feline herpes virus. FVR can leave some cats with permanent respiratory system and optical damage.

Leptospirosis Treatment
Leptospirosis or Lepto is a deadly bacterial disease spread by all animals. Common Lepto carriers include raccoons, skunks, opossums, squirrels, and rats. Livestock can also carry the disease. Lepto bacteria can survive for long periods of time in water. Lepto should be considered if your dog has a fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, or lethargy. Early recognition is important for a full recovery.

Core vaccines are considered vital to all dogs based on risk of exposure, severity of disease, or transmissibility to humans. Canine parvovirus, distemper, canine hepatitis, and rabies are considered core vaccines by the Task Force.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Virologists classify Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) as a Lentivirus (or “slow virus”). FIV is in the same retrovirus family as Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), but the viruses differ in many ways including their shape. FIV is elongated, while FeLV is more circular. The two viruses are also quite different genetically, and the proteins that compose them are dissimilar in size and composition. The specific ways in which they cause disease differ as well.
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
Contrary to what its name implies, feline leukemia (abbreviated FeLV or sometimes referred to as “feleuk”) is not a blood cancer – although it can cause cancer affecting the blood. Instead, it is a viral infection that can set up shop anywhere in a cat’s body. Once a cat contracts the virus, it cannot be cured, but keeping a cat current on his vaccinations will prevent disease associated with FeLV. Though it is not a core vaccine, it is recommended for cats at risk for exposure to this disease, such as cats that are allowed outdoors or cats that occasionally escape from indoors.

Arthritis Treatment
Need For Comfort – An older patients’ comfort is as important as their health. “Use a sling while walking a geriatric osteoarthritis patient to increase patient’s comfort; provide booties to protect thinning paw pads from hot asphalt and/or cold snow and ice; provide extra bedding to reduce or eliminate the frequency of pressure sores; and slow down and walk at the patient’s preferred pace.” In addition to these measures, geriatric patients should be on a joint supplements for animals (not humans!) that contains glucosamine and chondroitin. Two brands that we recommend are Dasuquin and Cosequin. All geriatric patients have some degree of osteoarthritis, even if owners do not recognize the signs. Many owners believe that animals are “slowing down” with old age when the truth is that the discomfort of osteoarthritis is keeping them from moving around as much as they used to. Many owners also believe that older patients’ with arthritis are more comfortable if they move around less, when in fact, the opposite is true: geriatric patients are more comfortable the more they move around, which helps to slow the progression of arthritis as well. As your pet ages, we consider dispensing NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications) because they fight the inflammation in your animals’ joints due to arthritis and this in turn helps increase their comfort and can make them more active. Other pain medications we can add to alleviate the pain associated with osteoarthritis are Tramadol, an opioid-like pain medication which reduces joint and bone discomfort, and Gabapentin, a neuropathic pain medication that has been demonstrated to be useful in treating chronic pain. Please ask our veterinary staff if you are interested in pursuing any treatment for your geriatric pet or if you have any questions on the information above.

This general health profile is an assessment of your pet's internal organs. The panel screens for liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, cancer and other endocrine disorders. Electrolytes including sodium, potassium and chloride are also measured.

Kidney Disease Treatment
Gastric volvulus and dilation (GVD) or "bloat" is a common life-threatening condition that affects many large and x-large breed dogs. It is characterized by a tremendous ballooning (dilation) of the stomach with gas and frothy material. Dilation may be followed by twisting of the stomach (volvulus) that closes both the inlet and outlet of the stomach. As swelling continues, shock develops as the swollen stomach blocks return of blood from the abdomen to the heart. Widespread tissue damage and kidney failure develop and death from respiratory and cardiac arrest soon follow.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Animals get periodontal disease, gingivitis and tooth decay just like humans. The breath becomes very odorous and the mouth becomes a dangerous source of infections. As most of us know, the gums and teeth can become very painful. What you don't see is the untreated tooth and gum disease allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream and causing not only infections but also eventually severe damage to the valves of the heart, kidneys and the liver.

Wound and Fracture Care
FeLV is a disease that reduces the immune system's ability to protect itself against secondary infections caused by common bacteria, viruses, protozoa and fungi. FeLV infection occurs worldwide, with prevalence varying by location.1 FeLV is transmitted through casual contact such as mutual grooming and sharing of food/water bowls and litter boxes, and can also be spread through bite wounds. While all cats can get FeLV, outdoor and intact male cats have a higher risk of infection due to an increased chance of contact with other cats and fluid exchange through fighting. Under ideal conditions, with proper care, infected cats can appear relatively healthy for many months to even years after infection.

As male dogs reach puberty, various secondary characteristics and behavioral changes can be observed. Some of these include undesirable aggression toward people and/or other dogs (especially male dogs), leash pulling, and humping behavior. An intact male dog may also have a tendency to "mark his territory" or urinate in inappropriate places. If such behavior is allowed to continue as dogs age, the behavior becomes learned and our chances of eliminating such behavior by neutering are greatly reduced.

Our dental procedures require general anesthesia. Pre-Anesthetic blood testing will need to be completed, prior to your pet's dental procedure appointment. Dental procedures require a 50% deposit be provided on your pet's procedure date. Once your pet in under general anesthesia, we will be able to begin performing a full oral examination of your pet. Just like at a human dentist, we will probe and chart each tooth and perform complete dental x-rays, which inform us of what treatments should be completed. We will monitor you pet closely before, during and after their procedure. We will maintain contact with you and schedule a discharge time for them to go home later in the day.

Microchipping your pet is recommended by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association and the Humane Society of the United States.
