Not having been to Giordano's in many years on Rush Street, I thought I'd play the game to get there on my visit in August 2009. Luckily, like you, I read a lot on the web about the restaurant in this day, parking, coupons and anything else I could find about "the experience." I found a site that has 3 useful coupons, one of which I used, when ordering my Giordano's pizza on Rush Street. My friend sat in the car and waited while I put our name on the list for dine in. I was advised it would be about 1 hour and 15 mins for two people. I took a menu out to the car, we decided on our meal, and 25 minutes later (as the restaurant staff advised), I went in to order our meal at the pre-order counter. You do not pay at this time, only order, and you have to wait 25 min to make the order. I then went back to the car and waited. I had not paid for parking yet, as there is a 2 hour parking limit. The pre-order was a smart move I learned from someone on another web site and it proved extremely helpful. If you put yourself on a waiting list for dine in and do not pre-order, you are certain to wait, on a busy day, 1 hour for your pizza after being seated. When our name was called (the announcements could be heard outside), my friend then paid 1 hour for our parking. We got seated and ordered beverages. I found it nice that if you were called and did not hear the first time, you'll be called again and you'll get a "last call" as a final measure to get you in. We gave the pre-order slip to the waitress and it actually took around 15 min to get the pizza, although we had pre-ordered it much earlier. So, even though you'd think the pizza should have been immediately ready after all of the wait and pre-order, it was not. But, 15 mins of waiting was not bad given that it would have been an hour without doing the pre-order. The waitress was not miss personality, but hey, we were more there for the food. The pizza, as expected, was delicious and hot! The coupon gave us a few dollars off which made it a decently priced meal for two. Thanks for reading my review.
People seem to either hate Pizzeria Uno, or love it, depending on their love of pizza and their background. This review is geared toward tourists, as downtown locals more than likely have been here already and have formed their opinons. Things tourists might dislike: The wait times can be pretty long (45 mins to over an hour when it's busy) and the place is small and cramped. Noise levels can also get pretty loud. Things tourists might like: Even though the wait times can be long, you can at least place your order when you put your name down so at least you may not have to wait much longer after you sit down for your deep dish pizza (which traditionally takes longer to make than a regular or thin crust). Things tourists might like or dislike: The deep dish pizza itself! I've had friends from the west coast come out and absolutely love the pie-like crust and how the toppings are placed under the cheese. At the same time, I've heard complaints about the tomato chunks in the sauce. Friends from the east coast have just plainly said that nothing is better than New York pizza. I have not had the chance to judge, though I hope to do so this summer. So there it is. I hope this helps people that have never been to Pizzeria Uno. If you're from out of town and are in downtown, I recommend a go at this place.
4.25 Stars. This was our second visit picking up and bringing the pizza home. Nancy and I ordered the "Michael's Special" which is cheese, sausage, mushroom, green pepper and onion. An important point worthy of note is that it was as consistently good this time as it was last time. This being the case we felt a review appropriate. We ordered a medium (14 in?) thin crust and there was enough left for another person had one been present to join us. Everything was fresh and the pizza sauce was especially good with a characteristic signature of sweet properly proportioned. Though the title states Pizzeria before Tavern if you didn't know better you would mistake it for a sports bar, with a long bar and over 20 large screen television sets positioned all over the premises. For me to rate 4 stars - particularly with all the pizza places that abound in Chicago is unusual, if the drinks are as good as the pizza I can see myself hanging out here on the less than frequent occasions I have some free time.
