All it takes is a little preparation to get your car winter-ready and to keep from getting into an icy situation.
It’s time to bring long sleeves and long pants out of storage, prep your home and car, and contact the cool weather home/yard contractors.
Stokes Auto Service in Bridgeport is the greatest ever!! My 1995 Bonnieville broke down on me the other day at a stop light. Since I was in Bridgeport returning home from my friend’s, I had no idea where to have it towed to. Thankfully, my friend called a few friends for a referral and I had my car towed to Stokes. He immediately checked it out, and not only found the problem of why it died on me, but another ongoing problem of which over the last few years I had taken to numerous mechanics who couldn’t figure it out. He noticed the alternator in my car was not the correct one and the mechanic that installed it forced it in and cracked my Intake Manifold. I was shocked he figured this out, especially so quickly and I hadn’t even mentioned any other issues. He knew my car like the back of his hand! My car was ready 2 days later and now is running like new! He was wonderful! He was spot-on in diagnosing my car within a couple of hours. He thoroughly explained everything to me. Their prices are fair and reasonable and I know he did quality work. I was very comfortable with him. He could have taken advantage of me since my car was towed there and I was “stuck”. But he didn’t. I know I would have paid much more for the same work elsewhere. Money is tight for me and he did all that work within my budget that we discussed. Stokes Auto Service is professional, honest and I got the heartfelt feeling that he really cared about my safety (not the money) and wasn’t going to let me leave with a car that may have jeopardized my safety. And he didn’t know me from Adam! I am so very happy that I have found a mechanic that I can trust! I will not go anywhere else, because being a woman; I have been ripped off by mechanics in the past. It will be a bit of a drive for me to use him, but totally worth it! He has a new happy customer for life! I cannot rave enough about Stokes Auto Service!!!! Tina U Evergreen Park

I've spent $1000's here and most of it was worth it, because I saved alot of money as well. Instead of replacing both of my malfunctioning door locks, they managed to clean and repair the driver-side lock, only replacing the passenger side lock, and for much less than I expected (the dealership wanted to replace them for x2 the cost, without even physically checking out the locks themselves). This is only 1 example of the honest, hard-working approach that this shop employs. I trust them to make honest assessments of the car trouble, while offering cheaper yet effective solutions than I would find elsewhere. Another for instance: I had damage to my right front panel over my right front tire, and they offered to either 1) replace the part ($400), or 2) mechanically pull out the dent and paint it ($300). Instead of just telling me that option 1) was the only choice, I was able to pick option 2), which when I asked for the difference between the 2 options, they said "nothing, they will look the same". This blew me away, because other shops prefer to "replace" instead of "repair" (which probably takes longer and costs less). I went with option 2), and the panel looks as good as new.
Once again Western and Bryn Mawr Auto repair helped me and got my 20 year old car running. I would hate to be the mechanic that fixes my car because my car is so old and am sure my car is hard to work on. Sami and George's mechanics are always nice, friendly and very respectful with me and I always walk away with a feeling like my job would have costed more had I gone to say a dealership. These are good neighborhood guys they always are more than fair with me and they keep my little ford in tip top shape for a 20 year old car. This time they did my break pads, rotors, tie rod, ball joint, 1 stud 2 calipers and an oil change. I am not going to say what I paid but asked around and everyone I asked guessed a much higher price than what these two brothers charged me. They are truly angels and are the best. Let me also add that my 20 year old car starts up like a brand new car in the cold weather and I really think it is because Sami and George's mechanics take such good care of my car. I bring it in every 3 months for an oil change and they look it over for me and make sure it is safe for me to drive. I am so thankful to them.
I take my 2001 Audi A6 to Precision Auto Repair for service for two years now. They did my brakes (other shop messed them up), timing belt, water pump and emission problem. The service was always very good, fast and not too expensive. I get the feeling that they really know their stuff at Precision Auto. Another thing that I like is that they always answer my questions in a way I can understand so I know what is being done and why. Another thing about them is that they will warranty their repairs for a year and they say they refund your money or fix it for free if the car is not fixed the first time. It is important because at some other places and they would replace many parts and each time I would have to pay. One place I went to for check engine light they replaced my oxygen sensor then did tune up and the light was still on! I took it to Precision Auto Repair, they fixed some kind of hose that they said was off and guess what no light. I really like these guys very much. Thanks Precision Auto Repair. Barbara N.
I found Marvin through my uncle when my Ford Explore was having problems. I was told by another mechanic that I needed to have all new ball joints. This was going to be over $3000 worth of work. I went to see Marvin and told him I needed a quote to have all my ball joints replaced. After he had my car for an hour he called back and said I needed to have 2 shocks replaced and one new tire. This totaled $200 worth of work. Because he was honest with me I was sold. I have taken 3 different cars to him. He is always fair, honest and never tries to screw me. I have recommended him to many friends who have all had great experiences! For as long as I live in the Chicago area I will bring my car to Marvin's. Marvin's is one of the few businesses left in the neighborhood (in which I grew up in) that has remained true. It you want a Latte with your oil change or if you can't understand someone with a Spanish accent that is a personal problem and you need to have more than just your car fixed!
Well here's the best kept secret on the northside! This is a family owned business that shows with their pride and hard work. I have brought my domesttic (chevy Lumina) and my fiance's import (toyota Rav 4) into the shop for regular maintenance and repair. Every time Sammy, George or another family member will walk you through whatever's going on with your vehicle and give you options or an estimate. These folk's are sincere where other shops are slick. This shop will help you look for ecomomy or quality depending on your needs. They are exceptionally knowledgeable about many vehicles and they are generous with their advice. Also, this is a working shop. They put their money into getting you a good value, instead of dumpint money gratuitous overhead and a fancy showroom! So be prepared to sit on an old car seat if you're going to wait for the repair. Lasty, if you want to be treated honestly and with respect, head over to Western Bryn Mawr Auto for a square deal from some great people. Ben Z
Well I can say is WOW! I just picked up my car from Dayton and I am so pleased. I had an accident a few weeks ago, where I had a good amount of damage. My insurance company recommended Dayton, so I had my car towed there. The shop manager Glen was very nice and explained the whole process to me and answered all my questions with sencerity. My car was in the shop for 17 days, in which they kept me informed the whole time. Since my car was in the shop, I called to ask if they could also fix a small dent that I had prior. Robin, the lady in the office was so helpful with getting back to me with a price and again answered anything I asked about my car. When it came to the insurance work, Robin took care of everything for me, to where I didn't have any of that stress. My car looks fantastic and back to the way it was before. I am very thankful to the entire shop and I will recommend them to anyone I know. Thanks again Glen and Robin for making my car look great and treating me so well.
Thank you for restoring my old car a 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4, it was almost impossible job . Your staff was very professional and absolute joy to work with. The job was to change the rear Rocket Pinion and also the rusting lines for the steering system. In order to do this they have also to change the struts and lower down all the rear components. It wasn't an easy task since there are no parts for this car. I found some in California and Mr Armando some in Chicago. They kept me informed throughout the process of the repair and of testing my car to make sure everything was working properly before returning the car to me. I truly believe you are one of the best mechanic in the area along with your son. I'm going to tell everyone. I know of my experience. You are truly a company that provides high quality auto repair with integrity, honesty, and excellent customer service at a fair price and with a personal touch. Andres Laguna.
I needed a front axle replaced on my Subaru. While searching the web for reputable service to do said work, I came across Pong's on n Clark st. Pong's had many 5 star reviews so I decided to check them out. On the way to the shop, I stopped at 4 other garages for quotes to compare. Pong's estimate was $50.00 cheaper than the lowest of all others. Price isn't everything though, their shop was also the neatest and most organized. I agreed to the estimate and was told it would be ready in 3 hours. A little over 2 hours later I received a call that my car was ready (nice surprize). They saved the old part and showed me the problem with the old axle. After talking to the manager? owner? (sorry I forgot his name) I found out that I could have saved almost $700. on a clutch replacement I had done at the Sube dealer. Bottom line Great servive and price. I will be recomending Pong's to all my friends Frank H south side of Chicago
There are more than 700,000 auto service technicians and mechanics in the U.S. Finding the right one to repair a dent in your car door or fix an engine that won't start can be overwhelming, especially when it's an emergency. Review a few important facts about auto repair professionals and what you can do to get the best possible mechanic working on your vehicle's issues for a fair price.
Looking For Reliability
Unlike home repair services that evaluate a property, meet with homeowners and have time to prepare before their physical work begins, auto repair businesses are often asked to make fixes on the spot. If you come into a garage with a tire issue, the expectation is the mechanic will know how to correct that problem quickly.
That is why reliability is so vital when searching for a trusted auto repair shop. It may take going to several different mechanics before you find one you are truly comfortable with. Pose questions to this professional to find out what approach they will take to repair your car or what alternatives are available. Shopping around also gives you the best opportunity to find the cheapest rate or the fastest service, as some garages may be backed up with other vehicles that need repair first.
A recommended way to locate a trustworthy auto repair professional is to seek out customer reviews. Online sites offer honest opinions from real customers who have used a business. Read through this feedback to learn how a business operates and what you can expect if you were to take your vehicle there. Look for reviews about how quick maintenance was completed and if prices were fair. By learning what other people have said about a garage, you can gain a better idea if it's the right place to go when you have a car problem in need of fixing.
It can be difficult to know which automotive problems are serious enough to require expert assistance. A ripped seat cushion or broken radio don't involve safety and will not warrant enough of a problem that going into a garage is required. However, setbacks with brakes, lights and other parts that are vital to the safety of your car's driver and passengers, as well as others on the road, necessitate quick fixes. Many modern automobiles will notify drivers of an issue, in the form of a signal on the dashboard or a noise within the vehicle.
In the event of an accident, even if your vehicle does not appear to have any damage on the outside, it is generally recommended that you see a trusted auto repair professional. Internal damage may have occurred, or an important part may have been knocked out of place. Fixing these issues before driving much further can prevent further vehicle breakdowns in the future. In the case of a serious accident, a body shop can assess the problems and determine the best course of action for repairs, as well as evaluate how much they will cost.
Beyond that, regular checkups are recommended. Tires must be rotated, fluids needs to be replaced and the engine must be evaluated. After driving 25,000 miles, most auto dealers suggest having the vehicle checked out to ensure everything is running smoothly. Taking the car into the auto repair professional you trust will protect you from further problems down the road.
Not every type of auto repair work needs to be done by a certified mechanic. You can fix some of a vehicle's issues just by paying attention to how the automobile is running and having a basic understanding of auto repair. Look over the ways weather may impact your car and what preventative measures you can take to avoid having to take it into the shop. At the same time, be aware of mechanic scams that can impact your experience.
Preventing Trips To The Professional
Some fixes to your car can be done without paying a specialist. Issues like replacing oil and air filters are relatively simple, with instructions provided in the owner's manual on how to make these changes. The same goes for replacing broken windshield wipers or burnt-out headlights. Such issues should be repaired quickly to guarantee safety, but don't require a visit to a garage. By handling these types of tasks on your own, you'll gain a better understanding for how your car operates and save time and money.
Along with understanding how to fix manageable vehicle issues that may arise, taking preventative measures to avoid future problems is a valuable time saver. Many problem-solving best practices are related to the seasons. Your vehicle will be in different conditions in the winter than in the summer, meaning it requires a different type of preparation.
In the spring and summer, you want to be sure your air conditioner and cooling systems work correctly. Given the high temperatures the vehicle will be exposed to, overheating is a common problem. Look over the system by ensuring there is enough coolant available. If it needs to be refilled, it is best to open the hood and add more to the car before it gets too warm out. Also, clean out fan ducts and other ventilation sources necessary for summertime driving.
For winter driving, features such as the defroster, heater and exhaust system are paramount. Look in your owner's manual for specific directions on how features should be checked and repaired. Many newer cars have a cabin air filter that can be replaced when needed, allowing warm air to continue to flow in. Also, check your tires before winter driving, as they need to be at the proper pressure to perform well on snow and ice.
There is a common worry among many people that auto repair professionals take advantage of the general public. Because so many people are unaware of how to fix the problems in their vehicle, they are nervous of being overcharged by mechanics or worried that the improper work is being done.
While the great majority of professionals in the industry are honest, hard-working people, a few bad apples can ruin everything. You should be extra careful when first visiting a mechanic to guarantee that the price you're charged and maintenance the vehicle receives are fair.
Among the common scams pulled are needless repairs, where a garage charges you for work that isn't necessary. Another popular one is attracting customers through a cheap oil change or tire pressure check. Then, when you are in the shop and your car is being repaired, they give you a long list of other corrections they'd like to make, therefore boosting the total cost of your bill.
The best way to combat these types of problems is getting a written estimate before work is done. That way, you can see how much repairs are expected to cost. If the final bill is higher than the estimate projected, ask to specifically see the work. Make sure information is put in writing as well. If a problem remains, you can have proof that work was not done to your satisfaction.
By working closely with an auto repair professional and doing some of the tune-up work on your own, you will be less likely to fall for these scams. At the same time, you'll be able to drive out with a clean and healthy vehicle, thanks to the repairs made by a trained professional.
