Extremely bad customer service... first time there & my last

    Provided by

I just waited over an hour for a pork chop at MATILDA-babyATLAS that the waitress told me was dropped on the floor and had to be remade. The group I was with finished their meals about 20min before my food was even ready, so I had to have the new pork chop made to-go. The waitress only offered me 25% off my pork chop, and I told the waitress I didn't think I should have to pay for it since it took about 40min longer than it should have and I wasn't even going to be able to eat it at the restaurant. Then, she brought over the to-go bag after and literally dangled the food in front of me and said, ""We'll it's right here if you want it for 25% off."" Extremely bad customer service… my first time there and also my last.

    Best Bar in Lakeview

    Provided by

One of my favorite bars in Chicago, even with the treacherous stairs leading to the bathroom! The eclectic atmosphere, fun jukebox, and mind numbing martinis add up to countless nights of fun.

    Wow

I can't believe what I saw. First, I thought my buddy had ditched me, however, I noticed my friend being dragged outside. Little to be known, my friend is a martial artiest and could have made an embarassing scene, however, he choose to be led out. Why the doorman did this, no one knows, he didn't even't want to let us know he ""kicked"" our buddy out. I have always had a good time at Matilda's previously, but I doubt I will ever be back.

Eclectic atmosphere, no TV's, great music and decent food. Plus, the back room has several nice booths to hang out in...\r \r Love it...

great deal with a real neighboorhood feel

    Provided by

My friends and I love Matilda's! It's got really great food and a jammin' jukebox that is updated frequently. The atmosphere is eclectic, yet hip. You can enjoy playing pool or darts in the upstairs, with the added bonus of not having to fight smoke. Or you can make your way downstairs where you can dance and light one up. We actually rented a part of Matilda's out for a birthday bash! The bartenders were very friendly and efficient, the atmosphere was intimate, and we were able to bring our own iPod of music to listen to. Matildas is a great deal with a real neighborhood feel! Check it out!

    Lovely lovely Matilda

    Provided by

Matilda was the first bar/restaurant I became familiar with when I moved to Chicago over two years ago, and its still one of my top three favorite places in the city. Because of the cozy/quirky atmosphere, friendly staff, and great juke box options it has the feel of a comfortable neighborhood dive, without actually looking like one. Its a classy place with top-notch food and drinks, and a fun place to hang out for a solo drink after work, a casual date, or with a group of friends.

Matilda = excellent service, food, & fun

    Provided by

I have been to Matilda's many times and it is an awesome bar. I have comments about two different types of experiences there, regular visits and private parties (in Baby Atlas).\r \r First thing that stands out is the funky atmosphere and the sign saying you must be 23 to enter. The decor is visually interesting and inviting. I've had several menu items, including the flatbreads, fish tacos, and wings. They are all excellent. The staff is a huge plus, extremely friendly and really add to the experience.\r \r I have also thrown several parties in Baby Atlas. If you have a group of say up to 50 this is one of the most fun places to have your party. The $25 / 3 hours is totally reasonable and you can bring your own ipod for music if you want. I don't know how it happens but by the end of the night we're always dancing like maniacs.\r \r You'd be hard pressed to find a better combination of fun, service, and value than Matilda's

    Great Neighborhood Bar

    Provided by

I live nearby and I consider Matilda to be the only worthwhile option in the neighborhood. The food is delicious, the music is always solid and the staff is extremely friendly. The beer selection is diverse, ranging from PBR (value), to something really German with an impossible to pronounce name (quality). Best of all, the environment accommodates both quiet conversation and rambunctious dancing. Matilda is always a great night waiting to happen!

    best of all worlds.

My favorite bar in chicago. The jukebox is incredible, food is affordable and tasty, and the staff's friendly. Somehow the place has managed to divide two entirely different atmospheres; lounge upstairs and funky dance dive downstairs. Surrounded by the neighborhoods of lincoln park, lakeview, wriggleville, and boystown the crowd is always diverse.

    Best Bar in Chicago!!

    Provided by

Matilda/Baby Atlas is by far my favorite bar in Chicago... has been for nearly 10 years, and always will be! The atmosphere is great: eclectic, modern industrial style decor but still with a sense of warmth; pool tables for those inclined; great juke box (you won't find the typical Lincoln Park Top 40 on here); much-better-than-pub-food fare; and a fun, welcoming staff. Come in early and take a minute to get to know the staff and management; you won't be disappointed. Take a trek downstairs (be careful on the stairs!) to check out the more intimate confines of Baby Atlas. A broader clientele on weekends makes for good eye candy, with a healthy mix of casual and trendy. Drink prices have risen a bit over the past few years, but it's still the best place on Chicago's northside to meet friends for a drink any time!

    quickly becoming my favorite bar...

    Provided by

I have now made it to Matilda several times, and have fallen in love. The decor, somewhat dark and sensual, creates a wonderfully relaxed ambience. The music rocks--last time I was there they were rolling through a Pink Floyd album. The drinks are plentiful, as they have an extensive tap with some great selections (Harp, Stella, Fat Tire...). However, my typical motivation for a trip to Matilda is for the food. I had one of the best burritos of my life here (hard to beat one made with filet mignon), and it is impossible to find a better deal than their $1 fish tacos. Highly recommended if you're looking to enjoy some quality food and drink in a great atmosphere.

Great neighborhood hangout, surprisingly good food for a bar

Matilda's is always a good place to relax after work or on a Friday night. Their broiled tomato and cheese appetizer is really great. Actually, I've never had a bad eating experience there.

Awesome Staff, Good looking but Casual people, Great Food, Weekend Dancing

    Provided by

I love this place. Every time I go there I have the best time. The other night I brought four of my girlfriends there on a Friday and we went down their crazy stairs into the Baby Atlas. It's such a sensual, loungie feel down there and the music was awesome. We danced all night. The bartender was playing hip/hop all night out of his iPod. Love it. And there service was great. And I always meet great people at this bar. The food is fantastic, too. Flatbread #1. I swear by it. So. Great staff. Great Music. Great Crowd. Great Time. I'll go there anytime. If you've been there and didn't like it, you must've been too drunk or something. Or didn't meet me. Ha! Kidding. See you there!

    Unique Neighborhood Bar

    Provided by

One of a few bars in Chicago that has such unique diversity. It's a great meeting place for drinks after work, and it's cozy enough to meet a date for dinner and cocktails. During the weekend, nights at Matida's are high energy, hopping, and full of young people. Baby Atlas, downstairs, is small and intimate, but bustles with energy in the late evenings. The food is amazing with nice presentation even for ""bar food"". The staff and bartenders are very friendly, and the owner Kevin, always makes sure he gets to know the customers and is very accommodating. Whether you want a low key place to meet, book a party, or meet lots of new interesting people, Matilda's, is an all in one neighborhood bar.

    Great Food; Great Service

    Provided by

Living a block away, my husband and I have been to Matilda's countless times in the last two years. We've never, and I repeat NEVER, had a bad experience, either with the quality of food or with the service. The wait-staff and bartenders are friendly, down-to-earth and attentive. The drinks are fantastic (especially the chocolate martinis) and the menu offers tasty twists on your ordinary ""bar food"" and offers light dishes as well. I highly recommend Matilda's to anyone visiting the North Side who wants a laid-back atmosphere, excellent food, and great service.

    Best Bar in Chicago...Hands Down

    Provided by

Spirit...No other adjective describes this amazing place more appropriately. Emerging from the encapsulating character of an unparalleled staff comes a spirit that permeates one's evening to the very core. It's a sprit that first manifests itself in the casual fervor of Matilda's eclectic atmosphere. With three entirely unique experiences woven together into one unforgettable space, this bar leaves no appetite unsatisfied. This, married with a finely assembled clientel that covers all ends of the demographic spectrum can make even a first-timer feel at home. Don't believe me...stop by and prove me wrong. I'll be the guy smiling in the corner stool.

    My Favorite

    Provided by

Love the bar, love the music, love the food, love the staff...what more can I say? I have been a regular at this bar for 5 years and I cannot get enough of it. The atmosphere is great, there is always a cool crowd and the waitstaff is always accommodating and friendly. Weeknights are great because there are people there, but it is not too crowded and the atmosphere is chill. Tuesdays are the best because there are $1.00 fish tacos and a beer special. The weekends are more crowded, but in the way that you want it to be on a weekend...a crowd with a good, fun vibe. I would highly recommend this bar any night of the week!

Great neighborhood spot during the week

    Provided by

I am a regular customer to Matilda during the week because of their fantastic menu, specifically the best fish tacos in Chicago. It is a nice low key crowd during the week and the servers are all very friendly and quick. I have been on the weekends and the crowd is quite different and really becomes more of a young rowdy bar, but I continue to keep it as a mainstay dinner and drinks spot during the week.

    Favorite place in Chicago--hands down

    Provided by

Matilda is just the best, best place for so many reasons--from the amazing music and delicious food to the friendly staff and eclectic decor--its my ideal hang-out. My only small complaint is that it gets busy on weekends, but that's pretty much every bar in Chicago. The service is still great and they treat their customers--all customers--wonderfully with food & drink specials and themed parties all year long. Did I mention the food is a-MAZING?? You really can't put bar + food in same sentence here. Matilda has been my favorite bar since I first wandered in late September 2005. I have since moved away from the neighborhood but still make an effort to come back as much as possible. Its perfect for hanging out on weeknights, celebrating a special night with friends, or meeting up with a ex-lover--I really could not think up a better place.
