Adherence to Stupid Policies
I have just been forced to experience an achievement of excessive ignorance. My wife and I went into Pier 51 in Pineville, NC to get a quick bite to eat after some shopping. This is a seafood restaurant in a strip mall over by Burlington Coat Factory. I still eat seafood sometimes but my wife has been a vegetarian her entire life. Seeing how there was nothing on the menu that didn't have meat (other than the salad bar), she decided to order the Grilled Cheese sandwich from the kids menu. Usually this is no problem but not today.
The waitress looks at us and says ""No, that is for kids but let me check with the manager"". She goes back in the kitchen then returns and says ""No, you can't order a grilled cheese. That is for children"". This is quickly becoming a Larry David moment as I ask, ""Why? What's the difference? Is there something in this selection that is harmful to adults but not children? Just pretend she's a kid and bring the sandwich."" I must point out that this particular selection of two pieces of bread and a piece of cheese is already $4.95 which must have a profit margin of something like 5,000%. We were not upset, just blown away by the extreme absurdity of this situation.
Though I am shocked by the stench of the horrible business acumen of this 'manager', I offer to pay extra for the grilled cheese. Extra! The thing is already outrageously overpriced! Again, the waitress looks at us with a straight face and says ""No, that is only for kids"". Now, I'm looking around waiting for Peter Funt to pop out and say ""Smile, You're on Candid Camera"" but he never does! I should also mention the fact that I was ordering something expensive so how they choose to adhere to such a ridiculous policy is beyond me.
Giving up, she asked for spaghetti with no meat in the sauce. The waitress again has to check with the 'manager'. She returns and says we can only order the adult spaghetti which has meat and denied us the meat-free spaghetti which was available (only for kids).
We left in amazement and went to Pike's where she ordered from the kids menu... no problems.
So... Einstein manager over at Pier 51, Pike's got my $40, not you, because you are an idiot. I might add Pike's was packed with a 20 minute wait while Pier 51 had 3 customers.
