Having been born and raised on Long Island, I know great pizza. Actually, pizza is an obsession of mine as I eat it for dinner most nights of the week. In New York, we have hundreds of great pizzerias to choose from. A few years ago I moved from Long Island to Charleston, SC. I spent months searching for a pizzeria that could even come close to my favorite spots in New York and was disappointed at every turn. The most popular choice, it seems, is Andolini's Pizza. I must say that after trying it a few times, Andolini's just isn't New York. It's OK, but not good. So, I pretty much gave up on finding a good pizza parlor in Charleston. Then, a friend on mine mentioned Baroni's Pizza in West Ashley. I had never heard of it, but thought I should give it a try. Let me tell you, this place IS New York. I got chills the first time I ate a slice from Baroni's. No detail was overlooked. Beautiful, well-done crust, slightly charred on the bottom, but chewy on top and obviously hand-made. Baked in the good, old-fashioned Baker's Pride Oven. One of the empoyees told me they make their dough and their sauce fresh daily. That reminds me...the sauce!! Whole roma tomatoes with fresh basil. No mistake about it. It had the perfect blend of basil and oregano, the hallmark of a truly great New York pizza sauce. The cheese, too, was perfection. It tasted like a combination of mozzarella and provolone, although the employees don't know (owner's secret I guess). I had the Monster Meat Pizza which had pepperoni, sausage, ham, bacon, salami, and extra cheese. It was without question the best pizza I've had in my years living in Charleston. If you've never been to Baroni's, go try it. You'll never go anywhere else again.

We ate on their back patio a few days ago. They have candlelit iron tables covered with umbrellas on their outdoor patio. (No indoor seating however.) From my understanding they do offer delivery all over downtown Charleston with a minimum order. Anyhow, we ordered two pizzas...a Margherita pizza and a Bianca pizza with roasted garlic and spinach. It was heavenly. The sauce on the Margherita pizza was so fresh. They were very generous with the fresh sliced tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, and basil....which I noticed they grow on their back patio. Kudos for that! The Bianca pizza was definitely a treat as well. They really piled it high with fresh spinach, which upon speaking with one of the owners, we found out they use organic baby spinach. The huge chunks of roasted garlic on the Bianca is very tasty on this pizza and we wished we had known because we would have ordered it with double the amount of garlic...it is that good. We had a chilled bottle of Prosecco with our meal and loved the fact that we could eat pizza and drink Italian sparkling wine with it! Definitely would recommend this cozy neighborhood gem to anyone looking for the best pie in town!
Athens Greek Restaurant on James Island is the best Greek Restaurant in Charleston Period! The food is outstanding, and the wine & drink list is good. I always order the roast leg of lamb which is so tender and you could cut it with a spoon, it's served with a Greek house dinner salad, with Greek dressing and Greek potatoes, which are perfect! My wife always orders the Greek chicken which is so tender and juicy. The restaurant is very clean, and comfy with outside patio seating available. I drove a truck and delivered food to all the restaurants in the Charleston area, including downtown. Athens was always the cleanest kitchen out of most of the others. This is a truthful review...I have read some of the other negative reviews, and what those people saw or went through I have never experienced in the 20 years I have been visiting Athens Greek Restaurant. Today is Valentines Day and I know where my wife and I will eat today, or maybe we will order a delivery and do a quiet dinner at home, but either way it's going to be Athens, because they are the best!
